Everything we know about huge fire in Speedwell: Residents evacuated as 70 firefighters tackle blaze

A huge fire engulfed workshop in Speedwell on May 3 with explosions and fireballs reportedly shooting out of the flames.

Residents living near to Speedwell's Strachan and Henshaw Building, based on Foundry Lane had to be evacuated.

Some families went to Croft End church while others have been welcomed into strangers homes.

At least 70 firefighters from across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire are currently battling the flames.

When and where did the fire begin?

The blaze broke out in a workshop on the ground floor of Strachan and Henshaw Building at around 6pm May 3.

Who is at the scene?

It's understood at least 70 firefighters were at the scene during the height of the fire including a specialist decontamination and environmental team.

Firefighters and Bristol Water worked together to ensure there was enough water to fight the flames with.

Police have closed off several roads around the building.

What's happening to residents?

Around 30 households have been evacuated. Residents are being offered sheltered in a church and neighbours are opening up their homes.

What are the fire service saying?

Group manager Steve Quinton has confirmed firefighters will be at the scene for a 'considerable amount of time'.

He said due to hazardous materials inside the car workshop, it's too dangerous for firefighters to enter. They are tackling the flames from outside.

The blaze spread from the workshop to a neighbouring office block, still within the Strachan and Henshaw complex.
