Everything we know about Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale as trailer airs

Downton Abbey is coming to an end this year and a first-look trailer of the hit show’s cinematic finale has been released.

Titled Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, the trailer for the upcoming movie features a title card that reads: "It's time to say goodbye." This seems to cement rumblings that this movie will be the last.

This is followed by a shot of Hugh Bonneville's Earl of Grantham patting the front of the iconic manor house on the Grantham Estate.

As this is only a teaser of the film, specific plot details are still under wraps. However, we still get a flavour of the movie, with shots of Dominic West's Guy Dexter in the West End and Michelle Dockery's Lady Mary in a typically stunning period gown.

There’s a sweet tribute to the late Dame Maggie Smith featured too, with a photo of her character, the Dowager Countess, framed on the walls.

Here’s a closer look at everything we know about Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.

Who’s in the cast of Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale

The first poster for the third Downton Abbey movie saw Lady Mary play a central role, wearing the same red gown she’s seen in during the trailer.

She will seemingly take centre stage in the film, but she’s joined by a familiar cast of Hugh Bonneville, Dominic West, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, Robert James-Collier, Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech, Penelope Wilton and Lesley Nicol.

There are also some new additions taking to the big screen, including Paul Giamatti, Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale and Arty Froushan.

Giamatti has technically already entered the world of Downton Abbey during its TV show era. According to an interview the actor did with Entertainment Weekly, his role in the franchise is “important”.

"I do something quite important in this [movie],” he said. “I was like, wow, this is random, I have a lot to do with the end of this whole series.

"I do something of real significance – good or bad, I'm not going to say! But, I do something that makes a big difference to how everything ends."

When is Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale out?

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale will be released in UK cinemas on September 12, 2025.

If you haven’t already brushed up on the story so far, all seasons of Downton Abbey are available to stream on ITVX.
