Everything to expect from Amazon’s Black Friday NFL game, from deals on your screen to … more deals

Welcome to the first Black Friday NFL game ever, which will no doubt be the beginning of a post-Thanksgiving tradition we’ll be watching for the next decades.

As we get ready for the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets to kick off, it’s a good time to remind you that the Week 12 contest will air on Amazon (but you don’t need a Prime account this week to watch, we’ll get into that), and that because it’s Black Friday and the company that sells, well, everything, there will be a lot of sales-related stuff surrounding this game.

To prepare you for what you’ll see on Friday, let’s break down why Amazon paid a reported $100 million for this thing and why it could pay off:

1
There's a reason why you don't need Amazon Prime to watch

This in and of itself is an ad of sorts: If you DON’T have Amazon Prime, you’ll be very tempted to invest in the service either to watch more Thursday night football or to get stuff you order quicker.

2
Be prepared to be bombarded with deals

You’ll see QR codes and deals during the game (but not during actual football action).

3
You may get different ads based on your Prime status

Forbes has more on this:

According to Ad Age, Bose will show three different ads using Amazon’s ad technology. One version has been created specifically for non-Prime members, while the other two will be shown to Prime members, displaying different products based on their past Amazon shopping behaviors.

The number, per AdAge, is $880,000 for a 30-second commercial, which is more than the normal Thursday rate. So they’ll make money off that more traditional model.

5
Amazon will drop specific deals during to game

From MLive:

Once the live stream starts at 1:30 p.m., Amazon will start dropping the deals at kickoff, the start of the second quarter, at halftime, the starts of the third and fourth quarters, postgame and at the start of Amazon Music Live (after the postgame).

Details of the deals have not been released but look for special discounts on the following brands:

  • LEGO
  • Nintendo
  • Dyson
  • Beats
  • TCL
  • DEWALT
  • and a “surprise” offer
