Eventually, Donald Trump’s frequent tangential social media tirades in all caps were going to get tiring to comb through. Seemingly, society was just in need of a guiding hand to finally see that — and California Governor Gavin Newsom just volunteered as tribute by turning his X social media presence into a Trump mimicry. Now not even MAGA followers who enjoy the president’s constant posts about just about everything under the sun like the style when it comes from Newsom.
Before Trump joined politics, his tweeting style was just as chaotic — but it felt at least authentic. It’s no secret that Trump has always been envious of A-list celebrities. He would constantly use his Twitter to talk about his thoughts on who Robert Pattinson should date or even go to celebrity gossip shows to talk about what Anne Hathaway’s loyalty should look like.
That was standard stuff when you glanced at his page in between very strong opinions about Coca Cola for some reason. But when he got to politics, he started using his page to agitate his political opponents. And soon, that became the only way he used his page as president.
Newsom has made no secret about his intention to challenge the president in all his actions. The relationship was actually initially pretty cordial despite the party line that divides their approach to governance. The first fracture between their relationship came when Trump threatened to defund the state’s education over California’s support of trans rights.
Then, in quick succession, Trump called the National Guard on the state over immigration and attempted to encourage gerrymandering Texas to improve the GOP’s chances in the upcoming midterm elections. That basically turned Newsom into one of his main adversaries because the California Governor declared that he would not take what he started describing as “words of an authoritarian” lying down.
Newsom then implemented a myriad of Trump tactics that his followers had been championing. He first sued Fox News for allegedly falsely accusing him of claiming he had not talked to Trump when they insisted they had evidence he had. Fox News did try to half-apologize, but Newsom declared that the apology was not direct and that they did not take full responsibility. As of this moment — the lawsuit is still going forward.
Then what he did next was to turn his page into a mimicry of Trump’s old Twitter and now Truth Social social media pages. Newsom is using the Californian Press Office X page to fire off posts in all caps that take aim at Trump, Fox News, and whoever might not agree with him. In one of his viral posts, he mocks Trump’s missteps (both literal and otherwise), Dana Perino, and even signs off as the president does in his popular line, “thank you for your attention on this matter.” Some people in the comments are loving it. Some abhor it, calling it obnoxious and unprofessional, with Perino specifically asking Newsom to be “a little more serious.”

But Newsom’s point is not being lost in the fray. Seemingly, everyone understands what he’s getting at. The president has taken the bar of political decorum quite low — and if this is what it takes for people to stop cheering for this chaos, then Newsom is very happy to do it.
