Everyone says the same thing as Joe Brolly documentary airs on Virgin Media

Viewers were all saying the same thing after Joe Brolly's Sport Stories interview with Tommy Martin aired on Virgin Media 1.

Former Derry footballer Brolly won an All-Ireland with the Oakleaf County in 1993 and has been prominent in recent years for his work as a pundit with RTÉ.

The interview covered a range of topics, including his notoriety as a pundit, his subsequent departure from RTÉ and his childhood experience of the Troubles.

The former pundit, who is also a barrister, described the anxious and uncertain nature of growing up during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

He said: "It was exhilerating - scary, I suppose.

"Very quickly it was clear that my father was a person of interest to the State.

"We were raided, turfed out of bed. Night time was scary and there were a lot of very serious things going on.

"My father was interned, one morning they came and took him. He was taken away for three years. We saw him a few times during that period.

"A knock came on our door one day and it was the shopkeeper next door saying you have to go and pick him up. He came home in triumph and it was never mentioned again."

Brolly also recalled how his childhood home was often used as a hideout for many escaping the pursuit of armed forces - including former Provisional IRA leader Martin McGuinness.

He continued: "Boys used to hide in our house, they'd come in and stay for a night or two.

"I remember a young Martin McGuinness in our house and my mother putting a fake moustache and beard on him."

The interview also covered his admirable kidney donation to Shane Finnegan back in 2012.

Brolly recalled the opportunity to donate and how it was a cathartic experience for him following on from a troublesome childhood.

He said: "I had waves of euphoria when it was going to happen. Afterwards, I felt ecstatic.

"The reason I'd given the kidney was to atone for the taking of human life by people close to me. To somehow make amends for that and I suppose feel that I could breathe more easily and take my place in society.

"It transformed me as a person and made me lighter."

Viewers were full of admiration for Brolly and many took to Twitter to praise him for the interview.

One user said: "Joe Brolly, a man who doesn't take a backwards step from anything in life. This is great stuff on Virgin Media One."

Another praised Brolly similarly, saying: "Amazing stuff so far Joe Brolly, comes across so well."

Another viewer pointed to the emotion and honesty contained in the interview.

They said: "Fair play Joe Brolly, raw emotion and raw honesty, that’s not easy."

The interview was conducted by Virgin Media's Tommy Martin.
