Everyone’s saying the same thing about RTE’s New Year countdown show

It was a quiet New Year’s Eve for some people who sat in due to rising Covid-19 numbers and restrictions on household visits and hospitality.

Many people rang in 2022 while watching TV, with lots of shows to choose from.

Some of those watching RTE slammed the New Year countdown show, which was presented by Una Healy.

The show, which took place at Dublin Castle, and was originally meant to be presented by the 2 Johnnies, but singer Una stepped in after Government restrictions forced a change of plans.

A number of people took to Twitter following the show, with many saying the same thing about the presenter.

"Sorry @UnaHealy. It seems RTE left you on a rock tonight. I needed to tune into BBC2 with Joel's Holland after 5 mins. Ireland really needs to up its game as this stage," one person tweeted.

Another added: "God bless Una Healy for doing her best to make something out of absolutely nothing.”

"Nothing symbolizes 2021 more than Una Healy making the most of what she had and somehow managing to squeeze an entire new years eve countdown show out of seemingly no running order!” a third said.

Others compared RTE’s coverage with the BBC’s.

One person said: “I gotta say RTE New Years celebrations was very poor last night, very depressing. Not even a lousy firework!!!. The BBC was better!!”

“@BBC rocked new years @rte ye are asleep sadly,” a second added.

A third said: “It’s a sad story when the fireworks display on BBC is longer than the entire RTE New Years show……”

Some viewers also claimed that RTE was “late” with the New Year’s countdown.

“RTE were 30 seconds late with the countdown. I was on the edge of my seat wondering if Una Healy would ever interrupt the guests to do it,” one person said.

Another added: “Pathetic NYE countdown… 10 secs late.. more excitement at a funeral!”

“RTE were late for the New Year and that just sums everything in this country up doesn’t it,” a third said.
