Everyone noticed the same thing about Cristiano Ronaldo during Ireland v Portugal but they didn't all agree with it

The Aviva hosted a match in front of a full capacity stadium since pre-Covid times on Thursday night as the Republic of Ireland clashed with Portugal.

Over 51,000 fans packed into the ground for the game and Cristiano Ronaldo certainly wasn't given the most Irish of welcomes.

The Manchester United attacker was booed every time he touched the ball and it was very clear to hear for viewers watching on TV.

A number of people took to social media to have their say on the booing, with some against it and others not.

One person said: "Is there any need for Irish “fans” to boo #Ronaldo? Not very sporting and not very “Céad Míle fáilte” More like English fans."

Someone else commented: "Boo him I want Ireland to win do not care for Ronaldo he throws himself around the place."

Another post read: "Half the population of Ireland at the Aviva to see Ronaldo and they boo him when he gets the ball #onlyinireland."

One other Twitter user posted: "Only in Ireland would we pay good money to go see one of the greatest sports stars of all time in the flesh, on a dirty wet Thursday evening, when tickets are tough to get... and boo the man everytime he's involved in the play."

Another tweet read: "Not since Peter Madsen was incorrectly identified as then-Rangers forward Peter Lovenkrands has a footballer been the target of so many boos at Lansdowne Road."

Portugal dominated the early exchanges with Gavin Bazunu having to save from Andre Silva and Coleman blocked Ronaldo’s goal-bound shot, but Ireland held firm as the first half reached its mid-point.

The home side forced a series of corners as the half wore on, but were unable to make the most of them as the game reached the break scoreless and with neither keeper having been troubled unduly.
