28 Years Later hit theaters earlier this month and while many are talking about the emotional themes and brilliance of Danny Boyle’s direction with iPhones, there is one thing that also has our attention. No, not Jack O’Connell in a track suit. It’s…zombie dong?
A new kind of zombie is introduced in the film: The Alpha. And we can clearly see why he’s the Alpha. Eventually named Samson by Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), the infected is played by actor Chi Lewis-Parry and, well, he’s completely naked. Meaning there are scenes where you do see his privates swinging in the wind.
Now, I wouldn’t say it was necessarily “distracting” but when Samson is on screen, it is hard to miss just how large of a figure he is. In both ways you’re thinking. It has taken over the conversation about the film though. People are either talking about the ending, which features a gang of guys in tracksuits talking with Spike (Alfie Williams) or Samson. And you can’t really blame people.
And, to be fair, the jokes are pretty great.
Lewis-Parry, who was wearing a prosthetic penis in the film, spoke with Variety about it. Williams is only 14 years old, meaning that nudity can be featured in the film but it has to be fake, leading to Samson’s prosthetic manhood, as it were. When Lewis-Parry joked about it, he said “Well, I’m 6′ 8′. I’ll say no more!”
But he also said, on a more serious note, that he grew close with Fiennes when working on the film. “We go to the gym and work out together a lot. It’s a special connection I have with Ralph, because I grew up watching the guy and in my very early days, around 2009 or 2010, I was actually a stand-in for Hagrid on Harry Potter. And Ralph was there in character and I remember standing next to him and just admiring and watching how he worked. And I shared this story with him while working on this and it brought us close.”
So, Samson is aware that we are all obsessed with his prosthetic but hey, at least we’re talking? He’s going to be running alongside Glen Powell in Edgar Wright’s The Running Man, probably clothed this time.
