'Everyone hopes for it': Jetro Willems sends a transfer message to Newcastle United

Jetro Willems has re-stated his number one priority is to sign and play for Newcastle United in an impromptu Twitter question and answer session.

The popular wing-back had made a fine impression at St James’ Park before a serious injury suffered at the turn of the year ended his stint prematurely.

But he revealed on social media that his comeback was progressing well and he should be able to play again in August or September. Given the fixture list will have to be totally overhauled to cope with the coronavirus pandemic, that might mean he doesn’t miss any of next season at all.

Willems also delighted fans by confirming in no uncertain terms what his priority is next season.

He told a fan on Twitter: “Everyone wants or hopes that I come back or sign a permanent deal at NUFC but I think its more a question for the club if they want me back.”

When asked what he wanted to do, he replied: “To sign and play for NUFC.”

Willems is with Eintracht Frankfurt and it looks unlikely that United will trigger the release clause in his contract that was pre-agreed. But new owners may want to look at the deal again considering how popular he was and how versatile he was, being able to play either left-back, left wing-back or in a midfield role.

In February he told ChronicleLive that Newcastle "felt like home" and had been back in the North East to visit his old teammates.
