'Everyone forgets about Jo Cox' - Anna Soubry explains why she has stopped holding surgeries

Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry said she had previously received "two death threats" every week and has ceased her surgeries - but reiterated that she helps her constituents in other "less conventional" ways.

"Everyone forgets about Jo Cox and how she was murdered on her way to a surgery", Ms Soubry told Nottinghamshire Live.

"I've had the whole of my office fully secured. I was getting about two death threats per week.

"I have not had a traditional surgery for a while now. What I do is less conventional to other MPs, I speak to anyone on the phone or I go to their home.

"What I do try and do is a meet the team and we go out into the area, but MPs do have to be very, very careful now."

Ms Soubry, who joined Change UK- The Independent Group in February, said she operates in a different way to most MPs anyway, but did emphasise the threat to politicians is still a prominent issue leading to her ceasing surgeries held in public.

She said Nottinghamshire Police recommended security personnel but added the safety of her staff members is more important then her own.

"It's about the safety of my staff and people forget they are targeted too. An MP's staff member has been killed before. Keeping them safe is more important than keeping me safe", she added.

The Soubry and Leslie to the fore as Change UK launches its European election campaign referred to the murder of Jo Cox, who was serving as a Labour MP for Batley and Spen when she was shot and stabbed multiple times.

Ms Soubry also mentioned the attacks on staff members, when Cheltenham Lib Dem MP Lord Nigel Jones' aide, Andy Pennington, was killed by a constituent with a samurai sword while Mr Jones was conducting his weekly surgery back in January 2000.

She said Nottinghamshire Police had been "brilliant" - particularly chief constable Craig Guildford and Inspector Simon Riley.

"Nottinghamshire Police have been brilliant. I've not had a death threat for three or four weeks now.

"I have not held a surgery for a while, but I have always worked on the basis that someone does not have to come and see me.

"It's just easier to go and see them [constituents] in their homes and sit down with them properly with a cup of tea and sometimes a box of tissues for a good hour.

"I can not do that in 10 or 15 minutes in a library during a surgery."

Superintendent Ian Roberts, of Nottinghamshire Police, added: "We have been working with all of our MPs and constituency offices to review security in order to maximise safety for MPs, constituency office staff and the public.

"This work is on-going and subject to continuous review. However, there is no carte blanche recommendation for round the clock security.

"It is pleasing to hear that Ms Soubry is complimentary regarding the support she has received from Nottinghamshire Police and in particular the local neighbourhood policing team.

"This is something which is replicated across the county in relation to all our MPs."
