Cases of violent crime, drug driving and fraud were among those heard by Bristol magistrates last week.
Bristol Magistrates' Court imposed a wide range of sentences from Monday, December 16 to Friday, December 21.
This reporting forms an important part of the UK's open justice system, that justice can be seen to be done.
Some of the key benefits of open justice include ensuring public confidence and respect in democracy and the administration of justice, as well as deterring people from committing crimes and thereby the details of those crimes becoming public knowledge.
Here are the people convicted at Bristol Magistrate's Court between December 16 and December 21, 2019.
Monday, December 16
Lewis Adams, 32, of Greystoke Avenue, Southmead
Adams pleaded guilty to stealing a vape tester device, worth £60, from a store in The Galleries in Bristol, on April 26 this year.
He was fined £60 and with compensation and costs will have to pay £205.
John Ayres, 42, of No Fixed Abode, Redland
Ayres pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon - a metal pipe - and using it to threaten a man at the Horseshoe pub in Downend on December 13. He also pleaded guilty to stealing alcohol to the value of £17.50 from Sainsbury's in Downend on the same day.
Those two convictions triggered a suspended prison sentence given on December 2 for a range of offences during 2019, including threatening behaviour and breaching a Criminal Behaviour Orders.
On December 2, he had been given a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, but he had committed further offences just 11 days later. He was jailed for 20 weeks for the incident in the pub, and four weeks for the theft.
Stuart Dawe, 33, of Rowacres, Hengrove
Dawe pleaded guilty to a string of offences committed during December.
* On December 4, he stole £85.94 of groceries from Aldi in Redfield. He was fined £50 and, with costs and surcharges, will have to pay £167.
* On December 15, he was guilty of dangerous driving around Knowle West, on Creswick Road, Throgmartin Road, Airport Road and the A38.
* On December 15, he drove with no insurance
* On December 15, he drove with no MoT test certificate - and was fined £55.
* On December 15, he drove a car on Creswick Road and failed to stop for the police.
* On December 15, he drove a car while disqualified.
For the more serious driving offences, Dawe was committed to Bristol Crown Court for sentencing on January 2.
Justin Hodgkins, 25, of Long Cross, Lawrence Weston
Hodgkins pleaded 'not guilty' to one charge of assaulting a police officer at his home address in Lawrence Weston. After a magistrates' trial, he was found guilty on December 9. He was given a Community Order with a rehabilitation requirement, ordered to pay £185 in compensation.
Carley Summerfield, 36, of Dean Crescent, Bedminster
Summerfield pleaded guilty to a range of offences committed on November 1.
* A public order offence in that she threatened a woman in Bristol city centre - an offence that was racially aggravated.
* A public order offence that she threatened a second woman.
* She assaulted a third named woman.
* She assaulted a police officer at Patchway police station.
Summerfield was ordered to pay a total of £121 compensation, and jailed for a total of 46 weeks, suspended for a year. She must also undergo an alcohol treatment programme.
Daniel Walters, 2, of Longcroft, Yate
Walters pleaded guilty to entering the Co-op in Gloucester Road as a trespasser with intent to steal on September 17.
He also pleaded guilty to the theft of £12,541 from Co-op in Gloucester Road between March 15 and April 12 this year. He was jailed for a total of a year, suspended for a year, and will have to pay compensation totalling £2,400.
Derby McGirr, 26, from Jubilee Road, Weston-super-Mare
McGirr pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods - a laptop and bag from one man, a bag of coins, and a vape and other items from a second man on December 14 in Weston. He also pleaded guilty to stealing a bank card, scratch cards, children's toys, a purse and a pram, all valued at a total of £400, from a woman in Worle on December 11.
McGirr was jailed for a total of 18 weeks.
Michael O'Neill, 45, of no fixed abode, Bristol
O'Neill pleaded guilty to a range of offences.
* Stealing a bike belonging to a woman in Portwall Place in Redcliffe on October 9.
* Handling a stolen iPhone belonging to a woman in Bristol on December 14.
* Stealing two bottles of aftershave valued at £140 from Harvey Nichols in Cabot Circus on December 11.
* Assaulting a man by beating at Cabot Circus on December 11.
* Assaulting a police officer at Cabot Circus on December 11.
* Committing further offences while on a conditional discharge for an assault on October 11.
He was jailed for a total of a year for all the offences.
Daryl Harrington, 43, of Beaconsfield Road, Weston-super-Mare
Harrington pleaded guilty to possessing 1.3g of cannabis on November 11 in Weston. He also pleaded guilty to failing to surrender to custody on November 26 in Weston.
He was fined £80 and, with costs and surcharges, will have to pay a total of £197.
Michelle Rattigan, 50, of Queenshill Road, Knowle
Rattigan had already pleaded guilty on November 7 to a single charge of assaulting a woman in Queenshill Road on July 23. She was made the subject of a Community Order, with a 7pm to 7am electronic tag curfew until March 8. She was also given a restraining order and ordered to pay a total of £275 in compensation, costs and surcharges.
Jason Travanti, 43, of Eastwood Crescent, Broomhill
Travanti pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting an emergency worker on October 27 at Wotton Road in St Annes. He was given 120 hours community service, ordered to pay £75 with £90 surcharge.
Joanna Gower, 51, of Bowden Road, St George
Gower pleaded guilty to a string of violent offences carried out on September 9 in Bowden Road; ABH to a man; Assault of a second man; and assaulting a police officer by beating her. She was given a conditional discharge for 12 months, and ordered to pay fines and compensations totalling £162.
Jonathan Dean, 36, of Jamaica Street, St Paul's
Dean pleaded guilty to possession of Spice in Penn Street, Bristol on July 7. That conviction triggered a suspended sentence for a string of thefts, public order and fraud from 2017 and 2018. He was given an eight-week prison sentence, suspended for a year.

Tuesday, December 17
Kaz Patrick Cunningham, 31 of Lisburn Road in Knowle
He stole meat and other goods to the value of £140.37 from Morrisons in Symes Avenue. He indicated a plea of guilty. He was discharged conditionally for one year and forced to pay £106.
Wade Anthony Jeffery, 58, of Rochford Way in Croydon
Failed without reasonable excuse to comply with the supervision requirements imposed following release from a period of imprisonment. He admitted this and was committed to prison for 14 days.
Jillur Rahman, 31, of May Street in Warrington
He assaulted a police constable by beating her. He indicated a plea of guilty. He must carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and pay £100.
Callum Baker, 26, of Tufton Avenue in Lawrence Weston
He had in his possession 1.6g of cannabis. He indicated a plea of guilty. He was discharged conditionally for six months and ordered to pay £21.
Nuba Evans, 20, of Pound Road
He without lawful excuse damaged glass front doors belonging to Pryzm nightclub. He admitted this. He was discharged conditionally for 12 months and ordered to pay £71.
Wesley Ferreira, 21, of Grevilles Grove in Ashley Hill
He drove a vehicle in Redland while under the influence of drugs, namely ketamine. He admitted this. He had been disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 15 months and must pay £299.
Anthony Jack King, 19, of Kildare Road in Knowle
He caused damage to a bicycle lock and stolen a mountain bike belonging to another person. He must carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and pay £415.
Khalid Ismail Kuluc, 19, of Stapleton Road in Easton
He was guilty of disorderly behaviour while drunk in Stapleton Road. He admitted this and was fined £72.
William Clifford Lear, 43, of Guinea Lane in Fishponds
He used threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour towards another person. He admitted this. He must pay £175.
Emma Smith, 31, of Auburn Avenue in Longwell Green
She drove a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. She admitted this. She was disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 12 months and must pay £267.
Joe Wicks, 19, of Fabian Drive in Stoke Gifford
He drove a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He admitted this. He was disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 14 months and must pay £382.
Jamie Wirrich, 27, of Queen Street in Newton Abbott, Devon
He was guilty of disorderly behaviour while drunk in College Green. He admitted this and was fined £250.
Daniel Jason Green, 29, of Padstow Road in Knowle
He assaulted someone by beating her and damaged glass panels in two doors belonging to the same person. He admitted both charges. He must comply with a curfew requirement and pay £375.
Jackiey Scholefield, 57, of Parkfield Rank in Pucklechurch
She drove a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. She admitted this. She was disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 24 months and must pay £417.
Sandra Williams, 53, of Greenways in Kingswood
She drove a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. She admitted this. She has been disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 15 months and must pay £354.
Daveene McCallion, 51, of Fouracre Crescent in Downend
He parked his vehicle in such a way that prevented his neighbour from carrying out building work on his land. He admitted this and must pay £252.
Samantha Rodmore, 40, of Clyde Grove in Filton
She stole make up sets from Boots worth £55. She admitted this. She was ordered to pay £277.
Wednesday, December 18
James Neil Chaplin, 46, of no fixed address
He stole meat from Sainsbury's in Queens Road, Clifton. He admitted this. He was committed to prison for eight weeks and ordered to pay £163.
Orla Gil-Henry, 39, of Shetland Road in Southmead
She starved a dog causing it to suffer. She admitted this. She must comply with a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and pay £375.
Stacey Lee Brookman, 31, of Stapleton Road in Easton
He assaulted a prison officer by beating him. He indicated a plea of guilty. He was committed to prison for 10 weeks suspended for 12 months and must comply with a curfew requirement during this period. He must also pay £457.
Scott Ronnie Lippiatt, 18, of Elton Grove in Bristol
He used racially threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour or disorderly behaviour towards another person. He was found guilty. He was discharged conditionally for 12 months and pay £470.
Kimberly Apps, 33, of Pendock Court in Emersons Green
She assaulted two people by beating them. She admitted this. A restraining order was issued and she must pay £404.
Obinna Anaebonam, 20, of Victoria Road in Wolverhampton
He travelled on a railway, namely Bristol Temple Meads, without having previously paid the fare of £123.60. This was proved in his absence. He must pay £535.60.

Jason Brian Mortlock, 40, of Pigott Avenue in Bristol

Thursday, December 19
Billie-Jo Lovell, 36, from Ashley Road, St Pauls
Lovell pleaded guilty to stealing meat worth £150 from Co-op in Westbury-on-Trym on October 4. She also pleaded guilty to stealing 20 pouches of Celebrations chocolates - total value £59.80 - from B&M Bargains in Patchway on November 8. she also pleaded guilty to doing the exact same thing - stealing 20 pouches of Celebrations chocolates - total value £59.80 - from B&M Bargains in Patchway - two days later on November 10.
She was made to pay compensation, costs and surcharges totalling £664 and made the subject of a Community Order, including a rehabilitation activity requirement.
Steven Bryson, 42, of Doncaster Road, Southmead
Bryson pleaded guilty to stealing 20 pouches of Celebrations chocolates - total value £59.80 - from B&M Bargains in Patchway on November 8. He also pleaded guilty to doing the exact same thing - stealing 20 pouches of Celebrations chocolates - total value £59.80 - from B&M Bargains in Patchway - two days later on November 10. He was fined £80, and ordered to pay back the value and with victims' fund surcharges, will have to pay a total of £316.60.
James Broad, 40, from Cabot Close, Yate
Broad pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified. he was caught driving in Rangeworthy, South Gloucestershire on September 3. He also pleaded guilty to failing to stop for the police, and driving with no insurance. The September offence also meant he'd breached a Community Order that was still in force from May 23, after he was convicted of a driving while disqualified on March 1.
Broad was ordered to pay £175 in costs and surcharges, banned from driving for another year and ordered to carry out 280 hours community service.
Gavin Cabble, 33, of Rowacres, Hartcliffe
Cabble pleaded guilty to two charges of breaching a restraining order on August 24 and 25 and again on November 5 this year. He was remanded on bail until January 17, pending a pre-sentence report being written.
Dominic Lane, 50, of Waterloo Street, Clifton
Lane pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, and with no insurance, on November 8 in Fishponds. He was banned from driving for three extra months, and will have to pay fines, costs and surcharges totalling £840.
George Fox, 38, of St Anne's Road, St Anne's
Fox pleaded guilty to stealing a woman's purse in Broadmead, on December 3. He was ordered to pay £50 compensation, and given a community order with a drug rehabilitation requirement.
Jack Lee, 18, of Collis Street, Amblecote in Dudley
Lee pleaded guilty to two separate charges of drug driving. He was caught on the M4 at junction 19 on July 15 with benzoylecgonine (cocaine) and Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (ecstasy) in his blood. He was banned from driving for 18 months, fined £160 and with costs and surcharges will pay a total of £437.
Amin Mohamed, 23, of Avonvale Road, Barton Hill
Mohamed pleaded guilty to one charge of drink driving. He was found driving in Temple Street, Bedminster, with 51mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath on December 4. He was banned from driving for 14 months, fined £120 and with costs and surcharges will pay £237.
Joshlin Searle-Bryson, 18, of Fane Close, Brentry
Searle-Bryson pleaded guilty to drug driving. He was found driving with the controlled drug Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (cannabis) in his blood, in Southmead on July 10. He was banned from driving, fined £200 and, with costs and surcharges, will pay £317.
James Bruce, 40, of Holly Crescent, Kingswood
Bruce pleaded guilty to two charges. The first was that he was in charge of an English Bulldog named Dorothy at his home in Kingswood on May 11, when it bit a police officer.
The second was that he was in charge of Dorothy and she was dangerously out of control in Kingswood Civic Centre on June 8 this year. He was made the subject of a Community Order. He was also given an order that Dorothy must be muzzled in public, and kept in another room whenever visitors come to the house. Bruce was also fined £50, with another £50 compensation.
Ryan Frederick, 33, of Marling Road, St George
Frederick pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while disqualified, and with no insurance. Police caught him in Lawrence Weston on December 3. He was made the subject of a Community Order which include a rehabilitation activity requirement entitled 'Thinking Skills'.
He was also fined £200 and with costs and surcharges will have to pay a total of £375.
Lisa Grant, 29, of Witch Hazel Road, Hartcliffe
Grant pleaded guilty to three counts of theft. She stole clothing and fragrance worth £129.96 from TK Maxx; stole RAB coats and body warmers worth £720 from Go Outdoors at Cribbs Causeway and stole RING video doorbells and Polo clothing to the value of £549.23, all in Cribbs Causeway on November 24.
She was made the subject of a Community Order which includes a rehabilitation activity requirement and a four-week curfew with electronic tagging.
Benjamin Hopkins, 29, of Westerleigh Road, Clevedon
Hoplkns was convicted of four offences. The first was that he stole £395 of items from JD Sports in the Sovereign Centre in Weston-super-Mare on August 22. That offence meant he'd breached a Criminal Behaviour Order to stay out of the Sovereign Centre, which had been made on September 11, 2018.
He also pleaded guilty to breaching the same order on September 6. He pleaded 'not guilty' to a charge that he assaulted a man in Weston-super-Mare on September 6, but was found guilty by magistrates on December 19. Hopkins was remanded in custody until January 2 to return to Magistrates Court to be sentenced. Hopkins refused to leave his cell to attend court.
Scott Kay, 28, care of Lime Road, Hanham
Kay was found guilty after a trial of two offences. The two offences were that he intentionally sexually touched a woman and a man at the O2 Academy in Frogmore Street, Bristol, on March 6. He pleaded 'not guilty' but was found guilty by magistrates, who adjourned the case for pre-sentence reports on January 16.
Duncan Legg, 19, of HMP Bristol
Legg pleaded guilty to obstructing a police officer in Hurn Lane, Keynsham on November 3. He pleaded 'not guilty' to breaching a restraining order by banging on a door of a house in Keynsham and shouting through the letter box, on the same day, November 3. After a summary trial, magistrates found him guilty. He was jailed for 30 days for each offence - total 60 days. He was also ordered to pay surcharges and costs totalling £522.
Friday, December 20
Aaron Gayle, 42, of Austen Grove, Horfield
Admitted failing to comply with a community order made by Bristol Magistrates' Court on 05/04/2019 for previous offences including burglary, failure to respond to bail, criminal damage to property, false representations and failure to surrender to police.
He failed to attend unpaid work inductions on 02/05/2019 and 11/05/2019 and a supervision appointment on 10/05/2019.
He was jailed for nine weeks.
George Fox, 38, of St Annes Road, Bristol
Admitted assaulting a woman by beating her on 19/12/2019. He was ordered to comply with a Drug Rehabilitation Requirement and to pay a victim surcharge of £90.
Wayne Griffiths, 44, of Muller Road, Bristol
He admitted stealing a Sat Nav, money loose change and a goal keepers glove from the victim. He was ordered to pay £337 in fines, court costs and compensation.
Daniel Knight, 23, of Maplestone Road, Bristol
He admitted that on 29/11/2019 he had in his possession 0.7g of cannabis on Whitchurch Road, Bishopsworth. He also admitted that when suspected of driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs he failed to provide a specimen of blood without reasonable excuse. He was ordered to carry out 200 words of unpaid work and pay £175 in fines.
Robert McGuiness, 59, of Stanshaws Close, Bradley Stoke
He admitted driving a vehicle on Stanshaw Close while under the influence of alcohol. He was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and was disqualified from driving for 18 months. He was also fined £175.
Georgina Willoughby, 28, New Meadows, Hengrove
She admitted breaching a court order which prohibited her from entering The Horsefair in Broadmead on 15/12/2019. She also admitted committing the offence while a community order made by Bristol Magistrates was in place for two counts of theft and two counts of fraud. She was ordered to complete a rehabilitation order requirement and to pay £175.
Melissa Taylor, 19, Ilchester Crescent, Bristol
Admitted that between 05/12/2018 and 09/01/2019 at Bristol City College committed fraud by claiming she was entitled to refunds. She was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months. She is also subject to a curfew for eight weeks. She was ordered to pay compensation of £1,580, a victim surcharge of £115 and court costs of £85.
Gemma Brown, 34, of Whitefield Road, Speedwell
She admitted that on 13/11/2019 at Tesco Express in St George, Bristol, she stole groceries worth £76. She was ordered to pay £76 compensation.
Elena Pentekova, 45, All Hallows road, Easton
She admitted driving a vehicle in Fallodon Way on October 31, 2019 with 162 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, exceeding the prescribed limit. She was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months. She was also disqualified from driving for three years and ordered to pay £207.
Sadiq Nadeem, 31, Ashley Road, Montpelier
He admitted that 0n 18/11/2019 at Bay Gardens, Eastville, he drove a vehicle with 104 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, exceeding the prescribed limit. He was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and to pay £225.
Matthew Ellis, 23, of Trym Side, Sea Mills
Admitted stealing clothing and household items on two separate occasions from Marks and Spencer at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway and being in possession of a de-tagger. He was ordered to complete 90 hours of unpaid work, complete a rehabilitation requirement and to pay £375.
Donna Hudson, 28, of Montreal Avenue, Bristol
Admitted stealing clothing and household items on two separate occasions from Marks and Spencer at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway and being in possession of a de-tagger. She was ordered to complete a rehabilitation requirement and placed under a six-week curfew. She was also ordered to pay £375.
Brian Woodman, 33, of Bantry Road, Knowle
He admitted threatening a woman in Sainsbury's in Broadmead on October 7, 2019. He also admitted assaulting two paramedics on November 19, 2019 and causing £80 worth of damage to a cell at Keynsham Police Station on November 27, 2019. He was ordered to complete and Alcohol Treatment Requirement and to pay £170.
Lee Varga, 35, Hazelwood Close, Staple Hill
He admitted failing to comply with a community ordered in relation to previous offences committed including multiple counts of theft, possession of cannabis and failure to surrender for bail. He admitted that on 19/12/2019 he stole three bottles of port worth £21 and two bottles of vodka worth £38 from the Co-op shop on Gloucester Road, Bristol. He was ordered to complete an alcohol treatment requirement, be subject to a six-week curfew and to pay £128.
Mark Garland, 44, NFA
He admitted stealing Yankee Candles worth £100 from Boots in Emersons Way and using threatening and abusive behaviour towards a woman on June 19, 2019. Due to the serious nature of previous convictions he was jailed for 18 weeks and a restraining order was imposed. He was also ordered to pay £990.
