Everyman notches up record sales in blockbuster year

Boutique cinema chain Everyman is hoping a string of upcoming potential blockbusters will help it to top last year’s record revenues.

Chief executive Crispin Lilly expects the James Bond film No Time to Die and Wonder Woman 1984 will be among the films to entice customers in 2020.

In the 12 months to January 2 the AIM-listed firm recorded 25% sales growth to £65 million, helped by demand to see movies such as the latest Star Wars, as well as new cinema openings.

It now has 33 venues and plans to open four more this year.

Pre-tax profits are expected to be 30% higher at £12 million.

Lilly said: "This is a solid result for the year. After record admissions in 2018, UK box-office fell by 1.9% in 2019; despite this we grew each of our key performance metrics and also increased our overall market share of the UK box-office. We remain positive on the outlook for the cinema industry.”

Shares in Everyman, known for its sofa seating, rose 9.9p to 223.9p.
