‘Everybody understands where they’re supposed to be,’ says Boston’s Derrick White of the Warriors

“Everybody understands where they’re supposed to be,” replied Boston Celtics guard Derrick White when asked what makes his team’s 2022 NBA Finals opponent unique, a succinct answer to a complicated question. One could point to the Golden State Warriors’ collective knowledge of how to win deep in the finals, or the individual greatness of their players, particularly what Draymond Green has done for what we expect from big men.

Or what Stephen Curry has done to transform how teams approach the game on offense. Truth be told, White had plenty of options to lean on when asked about the Dubs on Finals Media Day this Wednesday. “It’s a little random offensively,” the Celtics guard added, “but it’s controlled randomness.”

Part of a team that itself strives for and thrives off that chaos the Warriors love to create, the matchup is a stylistic pitting of the proverbial immovable object against the unstoppable force.

“They’re always competing and doing what they need to do,” observed White. “They have a good culture here and do a good job.”

For Boston to have a chance to hang a banner this summer, that will have to be something said about them in return. And while a winner is far from assured on either side, the seeds of a Celtics dynasty that might well one day match the Dubs could very well be in the process of being planted in Game 1.
