Every word Nigel Pearson said on Bristol City's win over Huddersfield and transfer deadline day

Another cracking game of Championship football and another very good result

Well, it’s a good result, played alright at times, and could’ve seen the game out better. But I think we deserved to win.

Attacking wise again caused plenty of problems

Yeah, we’ve got some good options so it’s nice to be able to change things and still get an impact on the pitch. It’s a game that we deserved to win, we could’ve made life a little bit easier for ourselves at times, but I think we were comfortable winners in some ways.

You’ve got yourself a super sub three goals in three substitute appearances for Antoine

Yeah, I mean Antoine’s come back from his difficulties in the summer and he doesn’t look any different so that’s good.

He was progressing so well, and that injury came at a bad time for him

Well, it was the end of the season on international duty so can’t do much about that.

Maybe stopped people coming in for him?

I don’t know you’ll have to ask other people.

Also, Nahki Wells is performing, isn’t he?

Yeah, Nahki Wells has taken his chance well and I think, he played a support role very much last year, but he’s taken his chance so far and as I've said before if players are in the team, it’s up to them to stay there. I suppose if you’re a striker it’s about trying to score goals.

A good header, a real striker’s goal which for a little striker is impressive. It was a good cross mind, wasn’t it?

Yeah.

Defensively one or two mistakes I suppose...

You’re going to get them, but we could’ve seen the game out with a bit more authority like I said.

They came here last year and put in a really hard-working display and deserved to win. But no one's outworking your team here this year that’s for sure

Yeah, we are.

Did you know today you were going to face a really hard-working team, did you feel that?

Yeah, I mean they’ve made changes from last year but they’re a side that were a couple of games or a game away from the Premier League. My view on that, we just look at ourselves.

What do you see, do you see real genuine hope for the season and progress?

Yeah, we’ve made progress there’s no doubt about that, there’s still areas we could finish games with a bit more authority but, look we’ve got a small squad, so we work with what we’ve got.

Any ins or outs incoming?

No.

You mention that small squad how nice is it now to have almost everyone on that bench to have played a part last year rather than padding it out with youth players?

Well look at the moment it’s alright but we haven’t got too many injured at the moment. We’ve got one or two who are unavailable, it would be nice to have a few more, but we’re having to work with what we’ve got. We’re not in a position to add to the squad.

Jay was someone who had to work hard to get back into the squad last year, I thought that was one of his better displays going forward today.

Jay’s done well since he’s been back in the side. He’s done really well.

Do you think that was one of his better performances today?

No, I can’t honestly say that. It’s not a performance that I’m particularly interested in picking out individuals at the moment. I think it was a pretty workmanlike performance. We deserve to win the game and it’s nice to be not overly satisfied having won the game. Really tonight was more about the result than it was the performance. We were okay, we deserved to win but we could’ve shown a bit more authority at times.

Is that the difference so far from last season?

No, the results are. The results are more important. I mean look we didn’t play that badly last year when people were after us but it’s because you’re looking at the result. That’s what I mean by we didn’t finish with authority. If they’d snuck a goal and put us under pressure you wouldn’t be asking the same questions.

It’s what it is, I have to look at what happens in the game regardless of what the result is and try and look at what really happened rather than how we feel because the result goes our way or hasn’t. My view on it is a bit different.

From a former centre-half playing out from the back, was your heart in your mouth a couple of times?

Not really, no. When we made mistakes possibly but no not really no. There you go you’ve seen some of the errors that have occurred so I think most people will go away happy because we won the game.

It’s the way you’re winning it though there’s a real confidence

We look like we’re going to score that’s the important thing about it. We’ve got a group of players that we know we’ve got a chance of scoring goals. Now that’s a massive shift from where we were at the early part of last season, because it felt like a struggle last year.

Transfer deadline day so you know we’ve got to ask the question.

Go on then.

Antoine in particular...

What about him?

He must have grabbed a few headlines today and the City fans will be absolutely desperate to hang onto him. What bid would it take to entertain anything?

Well, it’s a bit late now, isn’t it? One day to go and people haven’t shown any interest, so I’m not telling you. None. No bids as far as I’m concerned.
