Every word from Roy Hodgson on Manchester City defeat and Pep Guardiola's potential champions

A tough night.

Yes, it was, yeah. Half-time I didn't see us losing by that heavy margin, but it happened.

Once again, we were on the end of some spectacular goals, but I'm a bit disappointed we had a hand ourselves in presenting them with a couple of those goals, which he hadn't certainly done in the first half when we came in 1-0 down thanks to that fantastic cross from De Bruyne, and header from John Stones.

City are bang in form - are we looking at potential champions?

Oh, absolutely. I mean, we're talking again in football about how tight it is at the top of the table now and how many teams could actually put their name forward for a place on the trophy this season.

I've never doubted that Manchester City will be there or thereabouts when the season ends. The form they're in at the moment, the way they played tonight, I think that they've shown that they have all the qualities necessary to be champions of England, but it's pretty stiff competition this year, it's not going to be a cakewalk or a stroll to the title. I'm sure there will be plenty of big games still along the way.

But they certainly were very good this evening and unfortunately we were partly architects of our own downfall. But most of it, we have to give credit to the opposition, who were so good.

How much of the result was City making it difficult for you to get out, rather than just giving them the goals?

Well, I certainly don't want to take anything away from City's performance, I thought they were excellent, of course. That is the way they play and that's what they do to most teams.

They ask a lot of questions of you defensively because they are so good at finding the spaces and so good technically when they get into those spaces to get themselves goalscoring opportunities. So we had to work very hard, particularly in the first half, to deny them that.

But we also knew that it was going to be difficult for us to get out when we won the ball back because they are very quick to pressurise every time they lose the ball, that's what top teams do.

I can understand that we are defeated here by such a good team as Man City, but the thing that hurts me is the fact that in the first half we didn't look like conceding a lot of goals, but in the second half those goals came and at the end of the game we're looking at a heavy defeat.
