Dele Alli has opened up on Tottenham's Champions League exit by discussing a number of topics following the 3-0 defeat at RB Leipzig.
The 23-year-old spoke to BT Sport after the game which led to a 4-0 aggregate loss for Jose Mourinho's side.
On the heels of a trip to the Champions League final last season, it is a huge comedown for Spurs and Alli was 'devastated' post-match.
He told BT Sport: "It's devastating. We had belief before the game and we didn't perform," Alli told BT Sport. "If you don't step up, you will be punished. It's disappointing to go out like that after last year.
"The first one didn't change much but we conceded too many chances as a team. It's hard to come back when you're on top and concede two goals.
"We had to show our maturity and fight and we didn't do that. We can't use that (injuries) as excuses. We were missing some good players but that happens. The players that have come in haven't done that."
Alli also issued a brief apology to fans following the contest and suggested that his side's mentality was wrong.
"We have to apologise to the fans. They travelled all this way," Alli continued.
"We have to fight. We cannot hide and we know this hasn't been a good season for us. It brings you down to reality. We are in a bad situation. Confidence has gone at the minute but we have to turn it around.
"The mentality was an issue. We were second for a lot of balls. To concede the goals we did shows our mentality wasn't good there."
Meanwhile, Tottenham are seven points behind fourth-placed Chelsea and sit eighth in the Premier League ahead of a crucial clash against Manchester United next up.
He added: "We have to bring each other up. It's a whole team performance. We have to go again. It's a massive game at the weekend.
"All the players are mature enough to know they are not doing good enough. As a senior player I have to try and step up."
