What did you get from the performance because pre-season you are here for a reason? Also, how much is Zouma going to be part of your plans going forward?
"Obviously we want to win matches no matter what, but 10 days into pre-season having flown into Japan three days ago brings up a lot of difficulties for us physically. That's where I was really pleased with the players because physically they gave everything in strong humidity. There was some good individual performances, people finding their fitness and form, the normal things in pre-season that take a bit of time, which is probably being clinical in front of goal which we weren't, but that comes. Some small details we'll work on. I've got no fears and I was happy with big parts of the performance.
"In terms of Kurt Zouma, he's a very good defender for us, very good player, very good person and professional. I want him here, simple as that. We are competitive with the centre-backs we have in the team and he had a very good season at Everton and I can understand why they want him. He's a Chelsea player and I want him. I want him to be happy and he's working really hard. If he competes for a position and plays well, he plays."
Have you discovered anything new about your players in the 90 minutes and what do you think the issues are regarding not scoring?
"I think whether I discovered anything new today I'm not sure. I'm discovering new things everyday in training and in the game today with individuals. The biggest thing I discovered was a real appetite and attitude to work in the humidity with jet lag for a lot of the players. I think it's normal in pre-season that some of the finer details, and probably us on the ball, the quality of our play on the ball wasn't quite what we want but we will get there.
"In front of goal, similar answer. An early part of the season where we're not quite as sharp as we want to be but we are working towards that and I'm confident it will come."
Is there anything serious or connected regarding the two players missing through illness? Also, where does Kenedy stand over his future?
"The illnesses aren't related. Tammy Abraham has tonsillitis and Kepa reported a stomach bug this afternoon. I'm not a doctor but I think it comes alongside what I mentioned before about flying in, a lot of players aren't sleeping and are finding it difficult in different ways and it's come out in those two players. I don't expect either of them to be too long. Tammy's on the mend already and hopefully both will be in contention for Barcelona next week.
"In terms of Kenedy, my feeling coming into a big squad with a transfer ban was that I need to asses the players for as long as I can in pre-season to make sure we pick a squad with me having had good eyes on them in training and in games. If Kenedy continues to show the attitude and plays the way he played today, then he's given a great case to stay here, I know he has been out on loan in recent seasons, and be part of the squad. Nobody is in or out of the squad. There's nobody who has had a line drawn under them or over them. Everyone is competing and the squad will be picked in due time."
What did you make of Mason Mount's performance today?
"I thought Mason's performance was really good and it was a continuation of how he played for me last year and how he's trained for me since last Friday as he's not been with us long, but his energy and his quality... Mason's part of the first-team squad this year and it's time for him. His qualities will improve even more with the qualities around him. Everyone knows the hopes I have for Mason and he showed today a glimmer early in pre-season of what we might see this year and going forward."
