Every time I'm A Celeb has been thrown into chaos with stars rushed to hospital

I'm a Celebrity fans are in shock at the news Richard Madeley was rushed to hospital in the early hours of the morning after falling ill in the camp.

The 65-year-old telly favourite was sent to A&E to be checked out after he was struck down by illness and concerned crew and co-stars rushed to his aid.

It comes just after Richard took part in the Kitchen Nightmares trial, which saw him dive headfirst down a shoot and doused in mouldy fruit and vegetables as he searched for stars.

And as viewers eagerly await Richard's recovery, we take a look back at other contestants who have taken ill when appearing on the ITV reality show...

Freddie Star

Comedian Freddie Starr, 68 — who has heart problems and only last year had a quadruple bypass operation — ended up in hospital after an allergic reaction to a Bushtucker trial in 2011.

He appeared unphased despite a stomach-churning ‘Greasy Spoon’ challenge that involved eating a rotten egg, a pig’s anus, a camel’s toe, turkey testicles, mealworms and mice tails, all washed down with a cockroach milkshake.

The father-of-six swallow everything that was put in front of him to win the trial — but within minutes, unsurprisingly, he fell ill.

He was treated by medics on site before a stint in hospital.

John Barrowman

Viewers of the 2018 series will recall John Barrowman collapsing in agony after spraining his ankle in the jungle.

Torchwood star Barrowman, 54, fell and twisted his ankle as he walked with Harry Redknapp to wash the dishes, and was taken away for an X-ray.

Ant and Dec explained to viewers at the time: "John Barrowman had an accident in camp last night and was taken to hospital.

"He's fine, he's resting up but unfortunately we've had to exclude him from tonight's vote until we know whether he's able to return to camp."

Joe Swash

And it's not just contestants who have been treated in A&E as ex-Eastenders star Joe ended up in hospital after filming I'm A Celebrity: Extra Camp in 2018.

The soap star and presenter of the jungle show was rushed to the nearest emergency department in Australia for medical treatment after a cockroach lodged itself inside his ear.

But after a long wait, the doctors told him they didn't have the right equipment to get the critter out - meaning he had to wait another day to have it removed.

Joe took to Instagram to update his followers on the 'gross situation'.

Sam Quek and Fatima Whitbread

And Joe hasn't been the only one to have unwelcome bugs in their body.

Olympian Sam Quek had to call for medics in 2016 after a roach crawled into her ear during a Bushtucker trial.

The I'm a Celebrity star was taking part in the Wicked Windmill trial alongside comedian Joel Dommett when the critter burrowed in.

And in 2011 Fatima Whitbread famously had a similar experience but had a bug up her nose.

After 20 minutes the roach was retrieved but rather than discarding it, she had it cast in wax as a somewhat creepy keepsake!
