Every Scot to get £75 to spend in shops under Scottish Labour election plan

Every Scot over 16 would be offered £75 to spend in high street shops, under an economic stimulus plan announced by Scottish Labour.

The party would also try to boost tourism by offering a “third night free” for a staycation north of the border.

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar this week unveiled a recovery plan to boost the post-lockdown economy.

In a fresh announcement today, every adult aged 16 and over would be given a £75 “prepaid card" to spend in non-food businesses within Scotland.

Sarwar hopes the initiative would start in June and last for six months, but the cash could not be used for online purchases.

Alongside the scheme would be a 'shop local' campaign encouraging Scots to support their local high streets.

Any unspent cash at the end of that period would be donated to food banks.

In a bid to “jumpstart” the tourism industry, Scottish Labour would also promote the “Great Scottish Staycation 2021”.

This would mean Scots being offered a subsidy on holiday accommodation across Scotland for a third night.

It would contribute up to £50 per person to the cost of their third night’s accommodation, capped at £100 per hotel room.

Sarwar said: “The last year has been tough for us all. The pandemic has separated us from our friends, families and neighbours.

“But amid the hope of an end to the public health emergency, we must recognise that Scotland still faces a job crisis.

“Without urgent and ambitious action in towns across this country, hundreds of thousands of people face a future out of work - with empty town centres hollowing out once vibrant communities.

“But it doesn’t have to be that way - the people of Scotland deserve a brighter future, and we have it in our power to act.

“This is bold and ambitious thinking to aid our economic recovery and get Scotland back on track.

“This scheme would invite people from across the UK to visit every corner of our beautiful country - saving jobs and creating a lifelong love of Scotland.”
