Every Premier League record Liverpool can still break before 2019/20 season ends

Liverpool have become the first team to ever be crowned Premier League champions in June.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been almost perfect this season in the English top-flight and were just six points away from confirming their crown when football ground to a halt.

The coronavirus meant Liverpool were denied the chance to become the earliest Premier League champions.

They would have beaten Manchester United’s record from the 2000/01 season where they had it mathematically confirmed on April 14 but football was stopped in the middle of March.

Liverpool could have beaten that record by more than three weeks had coronavirus not caused the division to be postponed by three months. But there are plenty of other records that could yet be beaten by Klopp’s men.

Before Chelsea vs Manchester City, the Reds were 23 points clear at the summit of the table; the record the biggest points margin between first and second place is currently 19.

That was set by Manchester City in their Centurions campaign of 2017/18. That season, Pep Guardiola’s men also set the record for the highest number of points accumulated by a single team in a 38-game season, when they notched 100.

Liverpool need to take another 15 points from the remaining 21 on offer for them before the end of the campaign to beat that, and could yet pick up a total of 107.

The record number of wins in a single season is 32 - and Liverpool currently have 28 from 31 games.

Heading into the restart, five of their remaining nine matches were against sides in the bottom half, including both Everton and Crystal Palace.

No team has ever won all their home matches for an entire season, but Liverpool have won 16/16 so far and could yet become the first to achieve that feat and make themselves the leaders in the most home wins in a single season category.

The current record, set by Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United, is 18/19.

The Reds can equal the record for the most away wins in a single season, but Liverpool would need to win all four of their remaining away fixtures for that to happen, because the current record stands at 16 (Manchester City in 2017/18).

Despite it being June, Liverpool have already beaten the record for confirming their crown with the most number of matches to spare.

The previous record was five, achieved by both Manchester clubs, so Liverpool have already achieved that, and the Reds have seven to play.

Heading into the restart, they needed to wrap up the title by the time the final whistle was blown at the Etihad Stadium in order to beat this record, and they now have.

They would need to win the next three Premier League titles to beat Manchester United’s record of the most winning seasons in a row (three).

Meanwhile, the Reds already hold the record for the most consecutive home wins (22) and could extend that further, starting on Wednesday night.

While Liverpool’s place in the history books has already been written, their place at the very summit of the best Premier League sides of all time can still be achieved.

The ultimate prize has now been completed, but there is still plenty to play for in Liverpool’s final few matches of the 2019/20 campaign and beyond.
