Every Neil Lennon Celtic potshot since leaving as escalating barbs lead to astonishing claim

Perhaps the man who secured the two best European group stage points hauls in Celtic's history has a right to bristle about the reasons why his final season in charge was an unmitigated disaster.

Neil Lennon's Parkhead trophy record is impressive - both as a player and manager - but he was in the line of fire all of last season as the club's 10 In A Row bid collapsed.

He walked away in February but the damage was done during an abysmal autumn when the results stopped coming after a stuttering start to the season.

Lennon sensed danger last August as he went nuclear on his squad by sensationally telling wantaway players to hit the road after being dumped out of Champions League qualifying by Ferencvaros.

That incredible candour 14 months ago opened a box that has never been resealed for a club who continue to be beset by setbacks on and off the pitch.

And his latest astonishing claim that some players "could have played and didn't", is perhaps, his most remarkable yet.

Record Sport looks at the barbs that have followed since the departure of a Celtic legend who won't go quietly.

'Disaffection and tension'

Lennon was a guest on the BBC's Euro breakfast show in the summer and this was the first time he really delved deeper into what went wrong in a season when history was expected to be made.

His overview of a campaign to forget provided insight into his thinking on why his reign had ended on a sour note.

He said: “We had gone from before the lockdown rampant, gone on to win another treble. Then when the boys came back from the three-month break, a lot had changed in their mindset in terms of some of them wanted to move on. Which I got.

“Some of them had reached the top of the mountain and were looking at other mountains to go and try their careers somewhere else. Which was understandable. But it creates a little bit of disaffection and tension within the group at times as well, and there was some of that at times – there’s no question of that.

“There was a few and it doesn’t need me to say it. It was pretty self-evident in their performances. You’re hoping they’ll come round once the window shut. To be fair the window went on until October as well, so it was a long protracted window, and you’re hoping ‘right, come on, find your rhythm, find your form’. But it never materialised really.”

Griffiths slapped down

The Celtic boss didn't miss the striker who claimed he was given a raw deal by the Irishman.

Lennon didn't hold back.

He said: "He let himself down.

"He's on full pay for the three months of lockdown and he comes back, totally out of condition and a stone overweight, when he couldn't afford to be because he hadn't played much football in the previous 18 months to two years.

"We had worked really hard with him to get him back on track and before lockdown, he was in the team and scoring goals and doing absolutely fine.

"Then he comes back completely out of condition, way, way behind any of the rest of them and for me, that was totally unacceptable.

"During the lockdown, the three months off, we opened the training ground. You couldn't come into the building but my fitness coach set up fitness training for the players every day.

"So you would come in, in groups of two, and train for an hour a day - fitness work, every day.

"Callum McGregor, Scott Brown, James Forrest, Greg Taylor, Jonny Hayes - all the lads that lived in Scotland came in. Leigh didn't come in one day, not one day during the lockdown. You can take a horse to water but you can't force it to drink.

"He's saying, 'I'll prove people wrong' - he hasn't proved anybody wrong. He's not at the level of being a Champions League player, he didn't get picked for Scotland - you have to ask why.

"He'll say he didn't play enough games, towards the end of the season I wasn't there, John (Kennedy) obviously felt that he wasn't in the right frame of mind or condition to play for Celtic, which is a very high standard and I don't think Leigh got anywhere near those standards over the last year or so."

Edouard panned

Back on the BBC again but this time as a panelist on their Saturday show live from the Edinburgh Fringe.

But the Irishman wasn't playing for laughs when he answered a question about Odsonne Edouard 's efforts in the 20/21 season.

He said: "He was of his mindset with his representatives that a move was in the offing. When the pandemic came he had scored 27 goals up to March and he was sought after. Then the pandemic came and everyone is checking their budgets.

"You could tell in the preseason when he went to France that his body language wasn't with us.

"He was of his mindset with his representatives that a move was in the offing. When the pandemic came he had scored 27 goals up to March and he was sought after. Then the pandemic came and everyone is checking their budgets.

"We had one bid for Odsonne in the summer last year but it was nowhere near the valuation of the player.

"I said after the Ferencvaros game that there were a few players wanting to leave the club."

'Can't play the Ange way'

(SNS Group)

Lennon described Celtic's defending as "kamikaze" in the 4-0 trouncing against Bayer Leverkusen.

He was working as a pundit that night from within Parkhead and reckoned his former team were short of the players capable of playing the way Ange Postecoglou wanted.

Lennon said: "Are the players good enough to adapt to the way Ange wants to play? On the evidence of tonight you have to say no.

"They are losing too many games at the minute. I would be really reluctant to criticise the manager. There is a rebuilding job here.

"A new back five, injuries, I get all that, but the players they have brought in shouldn't be losing all of their away games domestically and getting hammered here will damage them psychologically."

Lennon has said so plenty about the season to forget but this latest claim is powderkeg stuff.

It's clear Celtic's players struggled mightily but an accusation that they avoided matches when available to play is incredible considering this was a team fresh off of a treble Treble.

Speaking to the Sun, Lennon said: “You could see it pre-season, the body language, they weren’t with us. You could smell it.

"Some players were, I wouldn’t say feigning injury, but they could have played and didn’t.

“This eats into the dressing room.

"You’ve got great pros like Scott Brown and Callum McGregor, unbelievably successful, being dragged down by guys who don’t want to be there."
