Every Championship team's points dropped and gained from winning and losing positions

The Championship season is done and dusted and for many fans, it was a case of what might have been.

Whether it was letting a lead slip late in a game or fighting until the bitter end to salvage a situation, there was certainly a healthy dose of drama throughout the course of the season.

Now Hull Live have done some digging and found out who gave up the most points this season.

Rotherham United were the league leaders when it came to lost points. The Millers dropped points from winning positions on 12 occasions this season, equating to 33 lost points, only seven fewer than the 40 they actually accrued.

Nigel Adkins’ Hull City were another victim of the lost points curse. During 11 matches this season the Tigers dropped 25 points. Given they finished 13th in the league standings, a mere 12 points off the play-offs, it shows the fine margins present in the Championship.

That was certainly the feeling among Aston Villa fans. Dean Smith’s side may still earn promotion to the top flight through the playoffs, but they could have gone up automatically if they had not dropped a similar 25 points from winning positions.

Meanwhile, eventual champions Norwich City had one of the lowest totals this season — a hallmark of champions. The Canaries gave up 16 points this season, but the record for the lowest total given up actually went to Leeds and Middlesbrough, who both gave up just 8 points.

All about the goals for Joe Lolley - and he has a pledge for Nottingham Forest

David Prutton's final Championship table had Norwich City finishing third with 107 points

While Villa threw away over two dozen points this season, they did also show tremendous spirit to earn five more than any other side whilst trailing a match. According to Transfermarkt's findings, they fought back 17 out of a possible 26 times to earn 29 points, that without, they would have finished just five points above the bottom four.

There is also a fascinating correlation between comeback and a strong finish to the season. The five sides who earned the most points from losing positions all finished in the top six.

Hull City clawed back from behind to earn 15 points during the 2018/19 Championship campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday, Blackburn Rovers, Stoke City and Bolton Wanderers were the only teams not to win a game this season from losing positions.
