Every Celtic fan has one simple message for Neil Lennon as crucial Kilmarnock clash rolls around

For Celtic fans it’s simple. For Neil Lennon it’s critical.

Eleven names, 10 big reasons and one piece of paper as the manager prepares to make a huge call in his career.

The Scottish champions finally found some form in Thursday night’s fine win over Lille, with a performance that didn’t reach perfection but was still very much on point.

Sure, twice Celtic lost a lead but unlike in so many Europa League clashes, there was no collapse and at no point did they go behind.

The 3-2 victory reinvigorated a support that has seethed for many months at displays they insist were simply not good enough.

Lennon made six changes for the visit of the Ligue 1 side. Out went Vasilis Barkas, Nir Bitton, Scott Brown, Ryan Christie, Tom Rogic and Odsonne Edouard. In came Conor Hazard, Shane Duffy, Ismaila Soro, David Turnbull, Mo Elyounoussi and Patryk Klimala.

And two of that group especially stood out. In only his second start since signing for Celtic, Turnbull enjoyed an energetic performance that was laced with skill and topped off with the well-taken winner.

One of the many criticisms levelled at Lennon these past few months is his determination to play Christie on the right, in the slot vacated by the injured James Forrest. It is not a position that best suits the Scotland star but on Thursday night Lennon did not feel it needed to be filled.

Instead, the manager gave the former Motherwell midfielder a licence to roam behind Klimala, popping up on the right, the left and driving forward from a central role as he and Elyounoussi swapped positions, leaving Lille helpless in picking up either player.

Makes you wonder why it took so long for Turnbull to be given the chance.

Another problem area has been central midfield, with Brown in the eyes of many supporters chief culprit in a malaise that has seemingly paralysed the nine in a row winners.

But against Lille, the lesser-spotted Soro was handed his chance. And boy, did he make the most of it. Like Turnbull, the Ivory Coast midfielder covered every green blade of grass, snapping at the heels of the side sitting second in the French top flight with a dynamic display.

Even the injury suffered by Jeremie Frimpong proved little of a setback to Celtic. On came Ewan Henderson, normally a central midfielder, for the Dutchman and he, too, enjoyed a fine cameo at right wingback.

So all of this leaves Lennon with a huge decision to make. The fans want their manager to stick with the side that won their one and only victory in Group H. But will he?

Kilmarnock are up next, shortly after a fans’ protest, at Celtic Park on Sunday.

And for a support that has railed against just about everything the club has done this season, there is light at the end of the players’ tunnel.

They just want to see the same XI that restored some respectability to Celtic emerge from there this weekend.
