English playwright Duncan McMillan’s Every Brilliant Thing charts the lengths we go to for those we love. With his mother in hospital, a young boy (played by British comedian Jonny Donahoe) constructs a list of little things to help her find a way to happiness. It starts with ice cream, Kung Fu movies, and Christopher Walken impersonations.
In a stripped-back interactive monologue, Donahoe pulls the audience in to perform alongside him. The intimate piece looks at misery and ecstasy – critics described it as the “funniest play you’ll ever see about depression” – and reminds audiences that even in the face of tragedy, joy can be found in the seemingly insignificant.
