Everton were taught an important lesson at Manchester United

Going to Manchester United on Saturday, we knew it was going to be a big game.

We've seen in the past that we do get ourselves up for big games, but my issue in the first half was that we were just giving them too much respect. The belief was lacking.

They were two good goals and we could have been a little bit tighter, but Manchester United are a top team that can hurt you if you give them that much respect.

History has shown with this group that they wouldn't come back. Under previous managers such as Marco Silva or Ronald Koeman, it would be a write-off and damage limitation at half time. We hadn't seen a fightback from this group of lads before.

Obviously that's been thrown out the window now with Everton organising them much better in the second half, getting the early goal back and earning the belief.

When we got it back to 2-2 we had Manchester United rocked and you wanted us to keep going, but unfortunately they did slip back and let the hosts get back into the game - conceding a goal we don't normally concede from a set piece.

But the fight on display to come back again to get the equaliser at the death just shows how far this group of lads has come.

Hopefully that will now bring belief that they can do it, under difficult circumstances and away from home.

Obviously we don't want to be left in this situation a lot. We want to be dictating games and winning these kind of matches.

But when you're playing against top opposition, they got a two-goal lead and probably thought Everton would lie down.

The boys came out fighting and got back into the game through sheer willingness and mentality, which was great to see.

I'm never normally happy with a draw. People will say that you'd have taken a draw beforehand, and yes you possibly would have, but you're never really happy with it.

But, with the way the game was going, at one stage you thought it could be embarrassing for us. The guys instead showed fight and determination right up until the death and they deserved a point.

I can't remember the last time we scored a last minute equaliser! It felt like a win in a way, and it was something I thought the players deserved.

Without playing all that way over the 90 minutes, they did show glimpses of what we can do when we have that bit of belief.

It's now down to the coaching staff to keep implementing that to the players so that they can show it on the pitch on a more regular basis.

Now that they've done it, they can look back and learn from it. If we work as a team, put a bit of aggression into our play - we can hurt any opposition.

Hopefully from now until the end of the season we can start believing in ourselves a little bit more.

Midfield improvements

I'm made up for Andre Gomes in particular after his form in the past two games.

Obviously we know his history, coming back from a nasty injury, but he's starting to show glimpses of the form he had when he first came to the football club.

When he first arrived here and he was on his game, he was head and shoulders above anyone else on the pitch.

It's great to see, after a disappointing result against Newcastle, the boys have bounced back with two positive performances - and Gomes and Tom Davies against Manchester United were instrumental.

They never gave in, they were more in control of the game and the ball, they were making good decisions, trying to break the lines.

I've been saying in this column for weeks that yes we can play it backwards and sideways, but when we need to show a bit more belief we have to find those difficult passes between the lines. We know James Rodriguez can do it, but we need central midfielders to do it a lot more.

Davies and Gomes did that. They were picking the ball up in dangerous areas, showing confidence in getting the ball from the back four and then driving forward.

While it's great to see them doing it, we want to see it now on a more consistent basis. As they start getting positive results on the back of their performances, hopefully they start believing they can do this a lot more.

Carlo is going to ask more from these players now. They've done it against top opposition, so prove that you can do it more often.

The more they do that, the more confidence they will get.

I think Tom feels more comfortable in that position, the old No. 6 position that he was playing in. You'll probably get the best out of him there.

He likes receiving the ball and being involved in the play so that's perfect for him. Obviously we are missing a couple of key midfielders, but his opportunity is there now.

It's difficult being in and out of the side for players like Tom Davies, who'd like to have a run of five or six games to prove he can be a key man for the team.

Whether he stays in the side, that's up to Carlo. But all you can ask from Tom is for him to come in, do his job well and perhaps give the manager a selection headache for the next couple of games.
