Everton weigh up managerial decision ahead of Chelsea clash as Premier League legend considered

Thomas Tuchel will be looking for back-to-back wins in the Premier League when Everton visit Chelsea on Thursday night and Rafa Benitez will arrive with a lot of pressure on him.

The Spaniard returns to Stamford Bridge as manager of the Toffees but has struggled to build any momentum since his appointment during the summer and is now facing an injury crisis ahead of his side's meeting with Chelsea.

Everton have won just one of their last 10 Premier League games, losing seven, and creeping ominously towards the foot of the table.

All the pressure will be on Tuchel's opposite number in midweek as Chelsea look to narrow the gap on Manchester City, and reports have started to emerge that the club are already sounding out a replacement for Benitez.

As is often the case, attentions have turned to a club icon. Duncan Ferguson previously did an admirable job as interim manager on Merseyside before joining Carlo Ancelotti's backroom staff.

This time, however, it is Wayne Rooney they are looking to bring in, with his Derby County side destined for relegation following a hefty points deduction.

Rooney is one of Everton's most successful youth products of all time, earning a £27 million move to Manchester United as an 18-year-old.

The Sun have reported that casual conversations have taken place between Rooney and the Everton board should the need to replace Benitez comes up which, unless there is a miraculous turnaround in form, seems more likely than not.

Despite the Rams doomed status, Rooney has picked up some impressive results with an increasingly threadbare squad, losing just seven of their 22 Championship matches this season, as many as sixth-placed Stoke City.

A win for Chelsea on Thursday night will take them to within two points of Manchester City, who picked up a 7-0 win against Leeds United on Tuesday.
