Everton vs Tottenham LIVE: Premier League result, latest updates and reaction

Everton vs Tottenham LIVE

Two headed goals by Tottenham Hotspur's Micky van de Ven helped his side to a 3-0 Premier League win over Everton on Sunday as the visitors became the first team to win in the Merseyside club's new stadium.

Tottenham made a sluggish start but took the lead in the 19th minute when Dutch defender Van de Ven nodded in from virtually on the goal line following a corner. Jake O'Brien thought he had equalised soon after but his powerful header was disallowed for an infringement on Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Van de Ven doubled Tottenham's lead with another close-range header from another corner in first-half stoppage time to leave Everton with a mountain to climb.

Vicario made some superb saves in the second half as Tottenham protected their advantage and substitute Pape Matar Sarr headed a late third to secure the victory that lifted Tottenham to third in the table with 17 points from nine games.

18:02 , Alex Young

67min: Double change for Everton now as Barry and Rohl replace Beto and O’Brien..

Matt Verri at Hill Dickinson Stadium

18:01 , Alex Young

So poor from Richarlison. Tarkowski made a complete mess of the bouncing ball but Richarlison can only blast it straight at Pickford.

Needs to be more composed than that.

SAVE!

18:00 , Alex Young

65min: Surely, surely, Richarlison has to score that?!

He gets a lucky bounce into the area and has plenty of time to beat Pickford, but fires a volley straight at the keeper.

Everton 0-2 Tottenham

17:55 , Alex Young

61min: This time, Kudus’ corner sails over everyone.

Two changes for Spurs as Simons and Kolo Muani are replaced by Bergvall and Richarlison.

Simons does not look too happy about it.

17:54 , Alex Young

60min: A long delay and finally Kudus’ effort deflects behind for a corner.

Everton 0-2 Tottenham

17:53 , Alex Young

59min: First booking of the game for Garner as he wipes out Kudus with a very late challenge. Spurs have a free kick about 25 yards out, dead centre of the goal.

58min: Richarlison is being readied.

Everton 0-2 Tottenham

17:51 , Alex Young

57min: Spurs are really slowing things down, and referee Craig Pawson is urging them to, well, stop doing that.

Matt Verri at Hill Dickinson Stadium

17:50 , Alex Young

That's an absurd save from Vicario. Beto looked certain to score with the overhead kick, but the reactions from the Spurs goalkeeper are incredible.

As good as anything he produced in Monaco.

SAVE!

17:49 , Alex Young

55min: Beto, from point-blank range, with an overhead kick, is somehow - somehow - denied by Vicario, who was moving in the opposite direction.

Everton 0-2 Tottenham

17:48 , Alex Young

54min: Everton fans growing restless in the stands.

Everton 0-2 Tottenham

17:46 , Alex Young

Not ideal this early in the second half.

Everton 0-2 Tottenham

Everton 0-2 Tottenham

17:40 , Alex Young

47min: Ndiaye’s first involvement of the second half is to send a cross into Row Z.

Spurs taking their time over the goal kick.

Second half

17:39 , Alex Young

46min: Back underway.

17:38 , Alex Young

As it stands, Spurs are up to third in the Premier League table.

17:34 , Alex Young

Ndiaye and Grealish the two very big threats on the wings for Everton, and you’d expect that to continue in the second half.

Spence and Porro have two very big jobs on their hands.

17:29 , Alex Young

Spurs don’t create too many opportunities in open play, but from set-pieces they look very dangerous every time.

They also look likely to concede from corners, though.

Half-time!

17:24 , Alex Young

53min: A long way back for Everton now.

(Getty Images)

Matt Verri at Hill Dickinson Stadium

17:23 , Alex Young

Might as well have the north London derby as some sort of set-piece shootout I reckon.

Another corner brings another goal for Spurs and Van de Ven is now on a hat-trick.

Without trawling the archives, I'd suggest he's never taken home the match ball before.

GOAL!

17:22 , Alex Young

50min: Van de Ven again! Just before the break, the defender flicks on a perfect delivery from Porro to nod home from a yard!

Everton 0-1 Tottenham

17:19 , Alex Young

49min: Bentancur heads over from the back post.

Everton 0-1 Tottenham

48min: Straight into the wall and out for a corner.

Everton 0-1 Tottenham

17:18 , Alex Young

47min: Simons wins a free kick on the corner of the Everton area.

Matt Verri at Hill Dickinson Stadium

17:16 , Alex Young

Vicario does not fill you with a huge amount of confidence from these corners. Everton putting it right on top of him each time and he keeps getting caught up in the scrum. That nervousness can't be helping the defence.

Everton 0-1 Tottenham

17:15 , Alex Young

45min: Danso hits the deck after another corner is cleared. He should be fine.

There is seven minutes added after various stoppages.

Everton 0-1 Tottenham

17:14 , Alex Young

43min: Spurs are retreating and retreating as half-time approaches. Kolo Muani not showing enough for the ball to provide an out.

CHANCE!

17:11 , Alex Young

40min: Beto left looking to the heavens as Ndiaye’s cross fizzes across goal without a crucial touch.

Everton 0-1 Tottenham

17:10 , Alex Young

39min: This is a real battle, for both teams.

Another Everton corner, Vicario gets nowhere near it but Danso heads clear.

Everton 0-1 Tottenham

17:07 , Alex Young

35min: This time Everton deal with the corner.

Everton 0-1 Tottenham

17:05 , Alex Young

34min: Pickford pushes away Kudus’s corner from underneath his crossbar, Spurs recycle possession and win another corner.

A bit of argy-bargy between Van de Ven and Pickford.

Everton 0-1 Tottenham

17:04 , Alex Young

33min: A big, long throw from Danso wins another corner for Spurs...

Everton 0-1 Tottenham

17:03 , Alex Young

31min: Spurs need to calm things down, which they are trying to do with more patient possession.

Matt Verri at Hill Dickinson Stadium

17:01 , Alex Young

They don't have the equaliser but Everton do have the home fans properly involved again.

A lot of frustration in the stadium - going to be a real test these 15 minutes before half-time for Spurs.

Everton 0-1 Tottenham

17:01 , Alex Young

29min: Ndiaye may be at fault for Everton’s goal not standing, but he’s running rings around Spurs on the right wing.

Surely he will be involved positively this afternoon.

Matt Verri at Hill Dickinson Stadium

17:00 , Alex Young

Loud, loud boos as the referee goes over to the monitor. Hard to argue that Ndiaye wasn't interfering with Vicario when he was in an offside position.

Unsurprisingly, it's chalked off after that VAR review. Sure Craig Pawson is delighted that he has to then explain that to a very angry set of supporters.

NO GOAL!

16:59 , Alex Young

28min: Ndiaye is ruled offside and interferring, and the goal is chalked off!

VAR check

16:57 , Alex Young

26min: Hold on, VAR want the referee to have a look at an offside or a foul...?

GOAL!

16:56 , Alex Young

25min: That lead didn’t last long!

Another goal from a corner as O’Brien heads in.

Vicario and Van de Ven feel the goalkeeper was fouled.

Everton 0-1 Tottenham

16:53 , Alex Young

21min: Simons is currently down receiving some treatment. He looks in some pain, unsure what caused it.

Matt Verri at Hill Dickinson Stadium

16:52 , Alex Young

Spurs haven't particularly looked like scoring from open play, but who cares if you can do it from set-pieces instead.

For the first time this afternoon, the away end is where the noise is coming from.

(Action Images via Reuters)

GOAL!

16:51 , Alex Young

19min: Perfect time to score!

Van de Ven heads home underneath the crossbar after Bentancur heads Kudus’s corner back across goal.

Everton 0-0 Tottenham

16:49 , Alex Young

18min: Deary me, Xavi Simons!

A slack pass almost gifts Everton an opening but, thankfully for Spurs, Beto is played offside.

Everton 0-0 Tottenham

16:47 , Alex Young

16min: Everton pressing well without the ball. Spurs boasting 62 per cent possession but not yet making any in-roads on the Everton defence.

Everton 0-0 Tottenham

16:45 , Alex Young

13min: A nervy Danso clearance almost plays Spurs into trouble, barely clears 30 yards from goal and Dewsbury-Hall and Garner come striaght back at Spurs before the move breaks down.

Everton 0-0 Tottenham

16:41 , Alex Young

10min: First link up between Kudus, Kolo Muani and Simons, which ends with the latter getting pushed off the ball inside the area by Keane. Fair challenge so almost mistimed.

Everton 0-0 Tottenham

16:38 , Alex Young

7min: Porro lucky to avoid an early booking for a foul on Grealish.

Everton 0-0 Tottenham

16:37 , Alex Young

6min: Nice link-up between Kudus and Bentancur sends the latter into the area, but he cannot find a team-mate in the centre.

Everton 0-0 Tottenham

16:35 , Alex Young

3min: Grealish should score!

Ndiaye does superbly down the right, squeezes in a cross which Beto misses and Grealish fires straight at Vicario. Huge save.

Everton 0-0 Tottenham

16:33 , Alex Young

2min: One huge kick over the top sends Beto scampering after it, but Vicario calmly claims.

Spurs fans making all the early noise.

Matt Verri at Hill Dickinson Stadium

16:32 , Alex Young

Interestingly from my position somewhere in the clouds, it looks like Kudus as the No10 for Spurs. Simons on the left, Johnson on the right where he normally looks more comfortable.

Kick-off!

16:30 , Alex Young

1min: Up and running on Merseyside!

16:29 , Alex Young

Everton have won every single Sunday home game since David Moyes’ return. Will that continue today?

Matt Verri at Hill Dickinson Stadium

16:23 , Alex Young

Pretty heavy rain, freezing cold and an Everton side that are yet to lose in their new stadium.

If Spurs are going to come away with all three points, you'd think they're going to have to do it the ugly way.

Hope Kevin Danso has been loosening up those shoulders for the long throws...

16:15 , Alex Young

Tottenham can move up to third with a victory this afternoon, which would put quite a different spin on the season so far ahead of facing Chelsea next weekend.

Thomas Frank's pre-match thoughts

15:55 , Alex Young

"It's great for Randal, great for the team, great for me and great everyone supporting Tottenham. He is growing physically; there are more layers to add but I'm happy with what I've seen.

"I admire David Moyes a lot, he makes extremely competitive teams and now at a new stadium. We want to compete in the best atmospheres and it's up to us to perform - and we will. I have big confidence in the group.

"We have an extremely good focus and mentality, and have been difficult to play against."

15:44 , Alex Young

Spurs have not won away at Everton since a 6-2 thumping in December 2018.

But Everton have only won twice at home against Spurs since 2012, and one of those was last time out.

It’s four changes for Spurs from the 0-0 draw at Monaco.

Kolo Muani comes in for his first start, and is joined by Simons, Spence and Johnson in the line-up.

Richarlison, Bergvall, Odobert and Gray drop to the bench.

Matt Verri at Hill Dickinson Stadium

15:19 , Alex Young

As expected, Frank once again sticks with his preferred midfield duo of Bentancur and Palhinha, as Simons comes back in at No10.

The big news is that Kolo Muani makes his first start for Spurs, nearly two months after joining. Richarlison only on the bench against his former club - he's looked very leggy recently.

Team news is imminent.

Moyes managing ambitions at Everton

14:55 , Alex Young

David Moyes is keen to raise ambitions but admits it is not the case of flicking a switch to turn around Everton's fortunes.

The Toffees have not won back-to-back league matches since August but were comfortably inside the top 10 until last weekend's defeat at Manchester City and heading into the weekend they were only three points behind fifth-placed Chelsea.

"It is for us to keep away from the wrong end of the table," he said ahead of the visit of Tottenham.

"But I want the expectations to be risen, which I think they have, but in the same breath I need sometimes just to say 'Hey, wait a minute here, just don't forget where we've come from'.

"I think the players are all quite clued-in, they know what I expect and what I'm looking for and where we want to be.

"I think Evertonians will understand when I say we're getting much, much better, but we've got a long journey to go to get to the levels.

"The first time I was here it took 11 years to probably get there, maybe a bit sooner, but it wasn't a journey which we could easily just turn up and say we were going to switch the light on here and everything's going to change.

"It's not, but we're we're doing a big job in trying to get it turned around as quick as we can."

Frank backs Richarlison against former side

14:45 , Alex Young

Following a fine start to the season, Spurs have now won just one of their last five matches eeither side of the October international break.

Richarlison had started the campaign in strong form, but his last goal was on September 21.

Ahead of Richarlison's return to Everton, Thomas Frank backed him to improve on his record of five goals against his former employers after being asked if it could spark him back into life.

"Yeah, hopefully. I think Richarlison started the season very well and, touch wood, he's in a good place," Frank said.

"I can't remember a spell this long where he hadn't had anything, so big praise to the medical guys and the sport performance guys to put him in a very good place. Plus himself, working hard on that."

Frank makes new Tottenham vow ahead of Everton clash

14:34 , Alex Young

After flat performances against Aston Villa and Monaco, a vow from Thomas Frank.

"I'm convinced that we will play with top intensity against Everton," the Tottenham boss declared at his press conference on Friday. "I'm also convinced that we will perform well, very competitive."

Frank admitted his team were "out of sync" and lacking in intensity in midweek against Monaco, when they escaped with a goalless draw but on another day could have conceded five.

Spurs have for the majority of this season been impressive off the ball and their defensive improvements from last term are significant.

Frank is confident there will be a return to those standards on Sunday for Spurs' first visit to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, but there was also an acceptance that a more long-standing issue is unlikely to be solved so quickly.

He continued: "Completely free-flowing and all that? That can be maybe not."

Everton vs Tottenham prediction

14:26 , Alex Young

Tottenham are the only team yet to lose away from home in the Premier League this season, but that record could come under threat on Sunday.

A pair of shaky performances against Villa and Monaco has left Frank with tricky questions to answer.

They struggled to create chances in both of their last two outings, and Frank has not had much time on the training ground to work on a fix. With Grealish back in the side, Everton will be well placed to punish an ineffective attack.

Expect a cagey affair. One goal could make all the difference.

Everton to win, 1-0.

Early Spurs team news

14:18 , Alex Young

Kevin Danso will continue alongside Micky van de Ven at centre-back, with Cristian Romero still out with an adductor strain.

Romero has returned to individual training on the grass but it remains uncertain when he will be available to Thomas Frank again. Destiny Udogie, who has not played for Spurs since returning from international duty with a knee injury, is also still out.

The midfield partnership of Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur has come under scrutiny, but this could be their third start in a week.

Archie Gray is an option in his preferred position should changes be made, while Lucas Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr are also pushing to start having had limited minutes recently.

Dominic Solanke is not yet ready to return after ankle surgery and Frank has a decision to make up front.

Randal Kolo Muani has made two brief cameos off the bench and the Spurs boss could opt to give him his first start in midweek against Newcastle after admitting he is not yet up to full speed.

Early Everton team news

Jack Grealish was ineligible to face his parent club Manchester City last week, and will be back in contention for Everton.

Jarrad Branthwaite will miss out after undergoing hamstring surgery, with Nathan Patterson also sidelined.
