City, meanwhile, climbed to fifth in the table with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium.

Team news

Everton will be without Richarlison again after he missed the Boxing Day match, having suffered a blow to the head against Manchester United.

James Rodriguez is set to miss the City game due to a calf injury. He is joined on the sidelines by Allan (hamstring), Lucas Digne (ankle), Fabian Delph (hamstring) and Jean-Philippe Gbamin (Achilles).

City will again be without Kyle Walker and Gabriel Jesus as they continue to self-isolate after testing positive for Covid-19.

Meanwhile, Guardiola says Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne must be carefully managed through the festive period.

“We thought about starting with Sergio (against Newcastle)," said the Spaniard. "We need him, I need him.

“(On Saturday) I had very good news in general: the fact he played for 15, 20 minutes and we saw him sharp, dynamic and good.

“It’s incredible news for us – we need him. Absolutely. We’re looking forward to him coming back but at the same time, we have to be careful.

“We cannot do what we did in the past when he came back and was injured. I want to handle the minutes.

“(Against Newcastle) I saw him do well, especially in his mind. I love this guy! He’s an incredible person and we need him."

On De Bruyne, Guardiola added: “We need him. Kevin is one of the biggest stars in the world right now.

“He is an outstanding player and I know how important he is for us. Sometimes, like in the game against Arsenal, he didn't travel.

“I prefer to have him fit for the Premier League, especially now the Champions League is over, and focus on the Premier League."
