Everton vs Liverpool broke Premier League record

Everton 0-0 Liverpool was not the most enthralling game that the Premier League has ever witnessed - but it did break the record for the highest number of television viewers in the UK.

Sky Sports, who broadcast the match live for free on Freeview channel Pick, have confirmed that the match was watched by 5.5 million people.

The previous record was four million viewers. That was set in 2012, when Manchester City beat rivals United as Roberto Mancini’s men closed in on the Premier League title.

Crystal Palace won 2-0 at Bournemouth on Saturday night, with 3.9 million watching on BBC One.

Like the Merseyside derby, that match was also free-to-air, which inflated the figures compared to a regular Premier League match, which is normally reserved for subscription services.

Liverpool face Crystal Palace next, on Wednesday night, in a match which could yet see them crowned Premier League champions.

That game will be screened live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League, meaning that it will not be free-to-air.

Everton, meanwhile, face Norwich City earlier the same day. That game will be on BBC One.
