Unsurprisingly Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner has some scathing words for his team’s performance against Macclesfield. Here’s what he said after the FA Cup holders fell to the biggest shock in the competition’s history:
I have no words for this performance. It’s not just losing, it’s creating almost no chances. It was really hard to watch, there was no physical presence, no kind of quality in our attack. This is what makes it so disappointing.
There is every emotion beside happiness. With all the respect [to Macclesfield] in a game like this you don’t need a tactic, you don’t need a manager who tells you what to do. You have to do the right things. We have to score five or six against a non-league team, but we didn’t show any kind of quality.

With all the issues around the S6 based club in the last twelve months, the best one hopes for each game is that one of the young players in severely depleted squad manages to nick a goal against an opponent and spread a small piece of joy.
It’s not going to be a vintage season of thrilling heroics against the odds and a getting a stomp on in the final third of the season to get the play off spot, but one of grim reconciliation with the fate that awaits.
As it is, they’re doing very well given the awful circumstances they are under. And will be again next season.

The last FA Cup semi-final at Hillsborough was played in 1997, a replay between Middlesbrough and Chesterfield after they drew 3-3 at Old Trafford. Replays and neutral games at anywhere other Wembley are now a thing of the past, as, sadly, are Sheffield Wednesday as a force in English football. With new ownership the truly dark times are hopefully behind this grand old club but they are still on the bottom end of the dip.
Brentford actually made it to Wembley in 1997, where they lost the Division Two playoff final to Crewe Alexandra. How times have changed. Brentford are expected to sweep past the Championship basement dwellers today.
There are eight FA Cup third round fixtures this afternoon and I’ll be keeping an eye on everything from Boreham Wood v Burton to Manchester City v Exeter.
