Everton v Liverpool the most watched Premier League game in British TV history

Sunday’s Merseyside derby meeting between Liverpool and Everton was the most-watched Premier League game in British television history.

According to Sky figures, an average of five million people watched Jurgen Klopp’s side resume their title charge with a goalless draw at the home of their local rivals.

And an audience peak of 5.5m comfortably eclipsed the previous record of 4.4m who tuned in to see Manchester City beat Manchester United during the thrilling 2011-12 Premier League run-in.

With supporters unable to attend or gather in pubs to watch the match due to ongoing measures aimed at halting the spread of coronavirus, Sky have agreed to make a number of games for which they hold the rights free to air across the remainder of the season.

Yesterday’s fixture was one of those, and was viewed by 1.9m people on the broadcaster’s Pick channel for non-subscribers.

Those who tuned in saw the two Merseyside clubs play out a drab 0-0 stalemate that moved the visitors a point closer to their first title in over 30 years.
