Full time: Everton 4-2 Brighton

Peep! Peep! Peeeeeep! It’s all over at Goodison Park, where Everton maintain their 100 per cent record and go top of the Premier League.Their seventh consecutive win in all competitions makes this their best start to a season since 1894, according to BT Sport commentator Ian Darke.

James Rodriguez bagged a brace, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Yerry Mina scored wonderful headers for the home side. Neal Maupay’s first half goal, in which the striker capitalised on a Jordan Pickford blunder, was rather eclipsed by a late, late screamer from Yves Bissouma.

GOAL! Everton 4-2 Brighton (Bissouma 90+2 min)

Wow! Yves Bissouma finishes with an absolute screamer from outside the box, chesting down the ball before sending an unstoppable volley past Jordan Pickford.

Updated

89 min: Mina gets in the way AGAIN! Doucoure lost the ball a few yards outside his own penalty area and Trossard pounced. He advanced into the area and sidefooted the ball to Maupay, who looked a certainty to score until big Yerry dived in to intercept. Outstanding defending.

88 min: Brighton win a throw-in, deep in Everton territory and take it very quickly. Everton win the ball back and embark on another counter-attack with Theo Walcott on the ball. He has a stop put to his gallop and Brighton win it back.

86 min: Mina gets his body in the way again, this time deflecting a low Trossard drive from distance out for a corner, from which nothing comes.

Updated

83 min: Yerry Mina, who has been excellent, albeit only the second best COlombian on the pitch today, is on hand to dive in and cut out a Solly March ball across the face of goal that’s fizzing towards Neal Maupay. Good work down the left from Adam Lallana in the build-up, there.

82 min: A diagonal cross into the box from Bissouma beats Yerry Mina, but Lewis Dunk is unable to make contact with the ball despite flinging himself at it. Brighton substitution: Pascal Gross is on for Steven Alzate.

79 min: Everton substitution: James Rodriguez walks off after an outstanding performance and is replaced by Theo Walcott. If there was a crowd at Goodison Park this season, they would have given the Colombian a thoroughly deserved standing ovation. You have to feel for Everton fans, whose delight at the excellent early season form of their team must be tempered by the fact they can’t go to watch them play in the flesh.

Updated

78 min: Almost certain to win their seventh consecutive game, it’s worth noting that Everton’s next Premier League game is a Merseyside derby against Liverpool. They’ll surf into that one on a wave of confidence.

75 min: Good tracking back by Iwobi, who is on hand deep in his own penalty area to cut out a cross from Ben White.

74 min: Adam Webster takes advantage of a James Rodriguez slip to try a shot from the left side of the Everton defender. his effort is deflected out for a corner off Jerry Mina.

GOAL! Everton 4-1 Brighton (Rodriguez 70)

Everton extend their lead with a lightning fast counter-attack. It’s similar to their third, with Alex Iwobi cutting in from the left to play the ball to Doucoure on the edge of the six yard box. He plays the ball wide to Rodriguez, who scores his second of the afternoon into a gaping net from an almost identical position from where he scored his first.

Updated

69 min: Brighton may be 3-1 down but they haven’t let their heads drop. They’re continuing to press for a second goal but lose the ball in transition and Everton score their fourth.

67 min: Solly March leathers the ball across the face of goal and Jordan Pickford can only punch the ball straight to Neal Maupay near the penalty spot. As the Brighton striker shapes to shoot, Michael Keane relieves him of possession, sparing more blushes for his goalkeeper.

65 min: Lewis Dunk is penalised for a foul on Dominic Calvert-Lewin, moments before Aaron Connolly is withdrawn by Graham Potter and replaced by Adam Lallana.

62 min: Nothing comes from the corner, which Brighton elect not to send into the mixer despite Pickford’s poor handling in this torrential rain. Graham Potter’s men are not only poor at defending set pieces, they’re not particularly good at taking them either. They’ve already wasted several free-kicks, choosing not to play the ball into the penalty area when the opportunity was open to them.

60 min: Jordan Pickford looks less than convincing once again as he misjudges the flight of the ball as it’s crossed from the right touchline. From under the cross-bar, Yerry Mina somehow manages to put the ball over the goal and out for a corner before being clattered by his own goalkeeper.

59 min: Solly March jinks his way past three Everton defenders before pulling the ball back from the byline. There’s nobody on hand to fire home.

58 min: Everton substitution: Fabian Delph on for Seamus Coleman.

56 min: Adam Webster fouls James Rodriguez, who takes the opportunity to have a rest on the sodden grass. Nearby, Seamus Coleman is also sitting on the ground and looks to have done his hamstring a mischief following a sprint with Aaron Connolly.

54 min: The camera cuts to a very forlorn looking Leandro Trossard, who knows he’s messed up. His wayward pass was punished with extreme prejudice by an Everton side who are looking set fair to win their seventh successive game in all competitions this season. Who are you, Carlo Ancelotti? And what have you done to the flaky, soft-centred Everton we’ve long been accustomed to?

GOAL! Everton 3-1 Brighton (Rodriguez 52)

Everton extend their lead. A dreadful pass outside his own penalty area from Leandro Trossard is picked up by Calvert-Lewin and played wide to Iwobi. He sends the ball across the face of goal and James Rodriguez has the simple task of slotting home his first goal at Goodison Park.

Updated

49 min: Everton go on the attack after playing the ball out from the back and win a throw-in on the edge of the final third. The ball’s played in to Calvert-Lewin with his back to goal and he attempts to spin away from Lewis Dunk, but succeeds only in sending the ball wide with a poor touch.

47 min: James Rodriguez picks up a pass in the Brighton penalty and tries to steer the ball past Mat Ryan. Adam Webster does well to block.

Second half: Everton 2-1 Brighton

46 min: Everton’s players are first out and have a brief wait as Brighton’s players make their way back on to the pitch from their temporary shelter located out in the Goodison Park car-park. Alex Iwobi gets the ball rolling. One change in personnel for Brighton: Tariq Lamptey is off and has been replaced by Joel Veltman.

Match report: Norwich City 0-1 Derby County

Championship: Wayne Rooney scored with a late free-kick to win all three points for County after Teemu Pukki had missed a spot-kick in somewhat comical fashion for Norwich City.

Half-time: Everton 2-1 Brighton

Everton lead by the odd goal of three at the break, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Yerry Mina scoring towering headers either side of Neal Maupay’s scrambled goal for the visitors.

GOAL! Everton 2-1 Brighton (Mina 45+2)

Oh Brighton. Everton win a free-kick wide on the right, just outside the Brighton penalty area. James Rodriguez whips in a cross and his compatriot Yerry Mina leaps between Adam Webster and Yves Bissouma to direct a powerful header past Mat Ryan.

45 min: The fourth official signals two minutes of added time as an entertaining first half draws to a close.

43 min: Jordan Pickford looks disgusted with himself following his latest error and so he should - it was a bad one. Trossard swivelled to volley Lamptey’s cross at the far post but succeeded only in firing the ball into the ground. As it bounced upwards, Pickford made a pig’s ear of what should have been a straightforward catch and could only parry the ball in front of him, where Maupay was waiting to devour any scraps that came his way.

GOAL! Everton 1-1 Brighton (Maupay 41)

Dire defending from Everton. Lamptey crosses into the penalty area from the right and Pickford fails to catch Trossard’s volley as it bounces up from the ground. Neal Maupay is on hand to scramble the ball home between Keane’s legs in the wake of Pickford’s poor handling.

Updated

39 min: Rodriguez plays a delightful ball down the line for Lucas Digne to chase. The ball’s crossed into the penalty area and Brighton clear.

37 min: Aaron Connolly flicks narrowly wide with the outside of his right boot after getting in behind the Everton defence to get on the end of a March cross from the left. Offside. That’s the nearest Brighton have come to a goal so far. They’re a decent side, but pretty toothless up front.

36 min: The rain continues to bucket down on Merseyside, where Tariq Lamptey is having a frustrating afternoon. The right-back has been outstanding for his side so far this season but has been well shackled by Everton’s defence. Any time the ball comes his way, he’s immediately surrounded by two or three men in blue shirts.

34 min: Aaron Connollly is holding his chest following some manner of off-the-ball tussle with Yerry Mina. The Var officials take a look at it but don’t make an issue of it.

32 min: A high cross-field pass from Michael Keane to Calvert-Lewin isn’t quite cut out and the striker gets on the ball on the right flank. He picks out James, who tries his luck from distance. He balloons the ball high and wide.

31 min: Coleman, James Rodriguez and Dominic Calvert-Lewin combine to good effect down the right flank for Everton, until Ben White steps in and dispossesses the goalscorer.

29 min: Digne gallops forward towards the left flank and plays a give-and-go to Iwobi. The return pass is intercepted and a reasonably promising attack breaks down.

27 min: Lucas Digne commits an identical foul on Yves Bissouma to the one Steven Alzate got booked for perpetrating against Seamus Coleman earlier. No card is forthcoming, although Brighton do get a free-kick. Altogether now: “All we want is consistency, ref!”

25 min: An injury doubt before the game, Richarlison is unable to continue. He limps off and is replaced by Alex Iwobi.

22 min: Brighton enjoy a period of sustained possession, pinging the ball from the right to the left side of the pitch before the ball ends up in the hands of Jordan Pickford after squirting his way following a clash between Lamptey and Richarlison. The Brazilian comes out second best and there’s a break in play while he receives treatment.

20 min: Lucas Digne brings down Tariq Lamptey to give Brighton a free-kick wide on the right, near the corner flag. Nothing comes of it, not least because Leandro Trossard’s delivery was appalling.

19 min: Everton threaten again but Adam Webster is on hand to clean up for Brighton when their defence was looking shaky.

GOAL! Everton 1-0 Brighton (Calvert-Lewin 16)

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scores his ninth goal of the season, leaping like a salmon to power home a Gylfi Sigurdsson free-kick from wide on the left with his head. Everton are in front and it’s no more than they deserve - that was an excellent header.

Updated

14 min: James is sitting on his backside on the wet turf complaining again, this time after being fouled by Solly March. Free-kick to Everton just inside the Brighton half.

11 min: The fake crowd boos loudly as Bissouma launches a meaty challenge on Richarlison. It’s been a very entertaining and spicy opening 10 minutes.

10 min: Alzate attacks for Brighton and tries to play a one-two with Aaron Connolly on the edge of the Everton penalty area. The return pass isn’t the greatest and the hosts clear.

7 min: Already booked, Steven Alzate courts disaster after James Rodriguez goes to ground following a coming together between the two players. There was very little in it and Brighton’s Adam Webster accuses the Colombian of trying to get his compatriot sent off. Free-kick for Everton but the referee’s cards stay in his pocket this time.

6 min: A wayward pass from James Rodriguez gives Brighton the opportunity to get forward and Yves Bissouma makes a surging run through the centre. Everton clear.

4 min: Brighton midfielder Steven Alzate gets the first booking of the game, cynically pulling Seamus Coleman back after the Everton full-back had got across him and was threatening to gallop up the field.

3 min: It’s Ryan to the rescue again, as Seamus Coleman tries a shot from just outside the Brighton penalty area. The Australian goalkeeper dives to his left to parry the ball clear. An impressive start by Everton; Brighton, by contrast, are still asleep.

2 min: The in-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin misses a glorious opportunity after being put through courtesy of a leaden first touch by the rusty yves Bissouma. Mat Ryan gets down to save well.

Everton v Brighton is go ...

1 min: The rain is pouring down at Goodison Park as Brighton (disguised as Brazil in yellow shirts and blue shorts) kick off, playing into a depressingly deserted Gladys Street End.

A Covid-related postponement ...

League One: “This afternoon’s Sky Bet League One fixture between Oxford United and Crewe Alexandra has been postponed due to a positive case of COVID-19 being identified within the Crewe Alexandra squad,” reads an EFL statement.

“Each case is judged on its individual merits, and due to the circumstances, the Club {Crewe] has advised the EFL it is unable to fulfil the fixture as players and first team staff are now required to self-isolate in line with EFL and Government guidance.

“A revised date for the rearranged fixture will be confirmed in due course.”

Elsewhere in Europe ...

La Liga: Eibar saw off Real Valladolid by the odd goal of three in the day’s opener in Spain, while Atletico Madrid entertain Villarreal in this afternoon’s three o’clock kick-off.

Bundesliga: With the transfer window due to close on Monday night, the omission of Manchester United target Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund’s matchday squad to face Freiburg has got tongues wagging in England. Don’t read too much into it – the winger has been suffering from illness this week and was always a doubt.

Everton v Brighton - early team news ...

Carlo Ancelotti is sweating on the fitness of Richarlison, who limped out of Everton’s midweek Carabao Cup win against West Ham after appearing to roll his ankle. The Brazilian was due to undergo a fitness test earlier and could figure from the start or off the bench. Allan and Jono Kenny also succumbed to injury in Everton’s midweek game and have both been ruled out of today’s game. They join Andre Gomes, Mason HOlgate, Cenk Tosun, Jarrad Braithwaite and Jean-Philippe Gbamin in the physio room.

Brighton winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh is absent today after picking up an injury in his side’s midweek defeat at the hands of Manchester United, while Dutch internatinoal Davy Propper remains sidelined with an achilles problem. Jose Izquierdo and Florin Andone are long-term absentees. In better news for Graham Potter, Yves Bissouma is available after serving a suspension following his recent dismissal against Newcastle.

Football! Football! Football!

The crowds remain absent but the games keep coming thick and fast. This weekend’s staggered Premier League action kicked off with Chelsea’s lunchtime kick-off against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge and will continue with the top flight’s only three o’clock kick-off between Everton and Brighton at Goodison Park.

Looking to continue their mightily impressive 100% record in all competitions with a seventh consecutive win, Carlo Ancelotti’s side host a Brighton team cruelly denied a share of the points in their last Premier League outing against Manchester United. We’ll bring you all the action from Merseyside this afternoon, while attempting to keep tabs on goings-on in the divisions below. Kick-off at Goodison Park is at 3pm but stay tuned in the meantime for team news and build-up.
