Everton Under-23s crowned Premier League 2 champions after beating Brighton

Everton U23s won the Premier League 2 title with a 1-0 win over Brighton at Goodison Park on Monday.

The young Blues went into the match knowing that victory over the side in second place in the table would be enough to confirm their status as champions with one game to spare.

And David Unsworth's side managed to secure the win thanks to a brilliant first half strike from Josh Bowler, cutting inside onto his left foot and curling a beautiful effort into the far corner.

The Blues had chances to extend their lead in what was a tight second half, but one goal was enough to bring the title back to Goodison Park - despite a missed penalty in the 82nd minute from Brighton after Lewis Gibson committed a foul inside the area.

Everton have now won the Premier League 2 title for the second time in three years, with Unsworth also leading a group of Blues youngsters to the summit of the table in 2016/17.

The final whistle sparked scenes of jubilation between the players and the crowd, with there believed to have been around 5,000 fans inside the stadium to witness the champions being crowned.

The Blues still have one match left of the current campaign, travelling to West Ham United on Monday April 29.
