Everton U23s continue unbeaten start to Premier League 2 season despite key injuries

Everton U23s continued their unbeaten start to the Premier League 2 campaign with a 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers at Goodison Park on Monday evening.

The young Blues did, however, lose important players in Morgan Feeney and Lewis Gibson in the second half through injury.

David Unsworth named a strong lineup for his side's fifth league game of the season with a number of players having been involved for the Everton first team over the summer and beyond.

After a hectic start, the young Blues eventually took the lead in the 21st minute as Gibson found himself free at the back post to convert a free kick from Antony Evans.

Blackburn struck back early after the interval as Joseph Rankin-Costello capitalised from a corner before Gibson left the field for Everton through injury.

Ellis Simms was the man who replaced the centre-back and he gave the young Blues a 2-1 lead after a fantastic through ball by Anthony Gordon.

Feeney was later also taken off as Unsworth's side survived some late pressure to seal all three points.

Everton now have two wins and three draws from the opening five matches of their Premier League 2 title defence, with a trip to Brighton on Friday next on the agenda for the young Blues.
