Everton tried to sign the 'best player' in Portugal this summer

Luis Diaz will be a name that brings up feelings of what could have been for Everton fans, after missing out on the winger this summer.

The Blues offered James Rodriguez as part of a potential swap deal with Porto, but the two clubs failed to agree a deal for the 24-year-old.

However, Diaz appears to have put the disappointment of his proposed move falling through firmly behind him, as the Colombian continues to produce sparkling performances for the Portuguese side.

Having caught wider attention following his impressive solo goal against Manchester City in the Champions League last year, Portuguese football expert Alex Goncalves has shared his thoughts on the player that Everton could have had.

“[He’s] arguably the best player in the Primeira Liga and I think it would’ve been an impressive coup if Everton had managed to sign him,” he said .

“He’s really stepped up so far this season and he’s just a player that can make things happen and inject some energy and momentum into the game.

“Very positive, very direct on the ball and just a nightmare for defenders.

“I think many people thought that he’d already have left for a more lucrative league this summer because he’s that good,” Goncalves continued.

“He’s proved it this season, he’s already top scorer in the league with five goals in seven games.

“A stunning footballer and one that you would imagine will be leaving Porto in the next year or so, whether that’ll be Everton or someone else.”
