Everton transfer plans explained after Abdoulaye Doucoure, Allan and James Rodriguez signings

Everton expect the signing of Abdoulaye Doucoure to signal the end of their transfer spending in this window.

Doucoure sealed his £20m move from Watford last night to join Allan and James Rodriguez in bolstering Carlo Ancelotti's squad ahead of the new season, which begins this weekend with a trip to Spurs.

Teenage defender Niels Nkounkou joined from Marseille in July, following the end of his contract, but Allan, Rodriguez and Doucoure look like being the only senior additions who arrive on permanent deals, at this stage.

Everton are to now revive their interest in adding defensive cover to the squad, at centre-back and left-back, but the club are currently only looking at loans.

Chelsea's 22-year-old Fikayo Tomori is under consideration by the Blues who are continuing to assess Mason Holgate, who suffered a worrying toe injury in the weekend's friendly with Preston North End.

The Blues spent around £20m on each of the deals to bring Doucoure and Allan to Goodison and while the money involved in signing Rodriguez from Real Madrid remains undisclosed, it is understood to be significantly less than the fee of between £22-20m that have been reported.

Everton spent close to £110m last summer but appear to have spent somewhere around half that amount this time.

It is believed that the Blues' net spend on transfers - with the proceeds of sales and money coming in from other clubs after clauses in older outgoing deals were triggered - is in the region of £40m so far.

The Blues hope to reduce that further by offloading a clutch of fringe players.

Everton had entered the window with the firm intention of moving unwanted players out before they started the bring new faces into the squad but a slow market, coupled with the fact that negotiations for Allan, Rodriguez and Doucoure meant those players were available much sooner than expected, saw the club move quickly to tie them up - and in time for the start of the new season.

Ancelotti is understood to be thrilled by the business Everton have conducted and believes Allan and Doucoure, in particular, will add the "energy" he identified as lacking in the Blues' midfield.

Everton will now focus on potentially adding two loan players to the defence whilst finding new clubs for players including Yannick Bolasie, Sandro Ramirez, Mo Besic, Callum Connolly and Matty Pennington.

A number of younger players are also being primed for loan moves.

The Premier League transfer window shuts on October 5 but a window for business to be done between top flight and clubs and those in the EFL, remains open until October 16.
