Everton to release Ashley Williams who could move abroad amid US interest

Ashley Williams will leave Everton this summer and could sign for a new club abroad.

Major League Soccer side DC United have been credited with being interested in the 34-year-old defender.

Williams is out of contract at Goodison later this month and his release will be confirmed on Friday when Everton's retained list is published.

The Wales international spent last season on loan at Stoke City in the Championship.

The former Swansea City captain has offers from "abroad and here" and says he is open to the idea of playing overseas for the first time in his career.

He told BBC Sport : "It's the first time I have got to the end of a contract in a long time," Williams says.

"It's not something I'm worried about - I am just excited to see what comes up.

"My agent says we have got good options abroad and here."

And on the prospect of playing abroad, he added: "I have played here my whole career, it's what I know, but I am not opposed to anything," he says.

"All the bits you would normally consider will come into it - on the pitch, lifestyle, what kind of deal it is."
