Everton to hand defender new contract as shake-up continues

The ECHO understands Everton have offered defender Con Ouzounidis a one-year contract extension.

Ouzounidis was part of the under-23 squad that won a Premier League 2 and Premier League Cup double last season and went on to make 16 appearances this term before the outbreak of coronavirus.

The 20-year-old was a regular starter upon his return from injury in November and January loan moves for both Morgan Feeney and Lewis Gibson elevated him to senior centre-back status.

With the academy season cut-short, Everton are understood to have tabled the Australian youth international fresh terms with his current deal expiring at the end of June.

Nathangelo Markelo is also ready to pen an extension before leaving on loan but Feeney, Matthew Foulds, Alex Denny and Manasse Mampala are set to depart next month.

Ouzounidis could look to seek a loan move in January but will initially focus on securing his place under Unsworth with Ryan Astley, Jarrad Branthwaite and Joe Anderson all competing for a starting role.
