Everton tactic allowing Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison to thrive under Carlo Ancelotti

Everton's identity under Carlo Ancelotti remains relatively up in the air at this stage, as he continues to construct his squad towards a specific idea.

There are various principles he's looking to instill based on his short tenure so far, with certain strengths appearing much more prominent than others since his appointment in December.

The Blues have become more vertical in their build-up play, for example, with an emphasis now placed on progressing quickly up the field rather than slowly composing moves.

In addition to playing in a more direct manner, another asset that has been showcased is Everton's aerial ability, particularly in attack.

Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have led the line since Ancelotti's tenure began, with both proving to be difficult to stop in the air largely because of their physical traits.

Certain numbers beneath the surface can offer an insight into the specific behaviours of a team, with Everton's aerial threat captured by passes per headed shot below.

Everton and Burnley are the two most frequent headers of the ball in attack, with the Blues averaging one headed shot every 143 passes.

Manchester United, by contrast, attempt a headed shot every 434 passes, followed by second-placed Tottenham on 379. Neither of those two sides pose much of a threat in the air, which certainly isn't the case at Goodison Park.

Richarlison has taken 21 headed shots this season, with his strike-partner attempting a total of 17, scoring four goals each.

The two strikers thrive from Everton's willingness to hit crosses into the penalty box, as captured below using passes per cross.

As pictured, Everton are the fourth-most frequent crossers of the ball behind only Sheffield United, Burnley and Aston Villa.

Crossing generally tends to be an inefficient means of attacking, but the Goodison side are clearly more proficient than most when it comes to presenting an aerial problem to opposing defences.
