Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin earns Newcastle United legend comparison

The Premier League's top scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been compared to Newcastle United legend Les Ferdinand.

Everton and England striker Calvert-Lewin has scored 10 goals in nine league games going into Saturday's home match against Leeds United.

If he finds the net in that game, the 23-year-old will become the first player since Ferdinand to score more than 10 goals in the first 10 fixtures of a single campaign.

Ferdinand achieved the feat for Newcastle in 1995-96, with 13 in the same period. He went on to score 50 times in two seasons at St James' Park (in all competitions) - and a total of 149 Premier League goals.

Trevor Sinclair, who played with Ferdinand at Queens Park Rangers, sees similarities between him and Calvert-Lewin.

“He reminds me of Les,” Sinclair told talkSPORT. “He really is a fantastic athlete… his timing, his movement. “I think Duncan Ferguson on the coaching staff at Everton will help him with his movement and how he moves a defender. He’s as brave as a lion, he’s scoring the goals.

“I think he had a little bit of time out and I think Carlo Ancelotti’s been really impressed with his consistency. I think he could, if he stays fit, fire Everton into that top four with the players that they’ve now got.”

Calvert-Lewin has scored 15 goals for club and country this season, in 16 outings. He was on target against Newcastle at the start of November but ended up on the losing side as Steve Bruce's men ran out 2-1 winners at St James' Park.
