Everton star's role in blocking Dele Alli from England squad, according to ex-Spurs midfielder

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O'Hara believes Gareth Southgate should not have left Dele Alli out of his latest England squad, despite his lack of form.

The 23-year-old was not included in the latest England squad for the upcoming games against Czech Republic and Bulgaria, having only featured four times for Spurs so far this season.

Alli missed the start of the season through injury, but he has only started three times for Mauricio Pochettino's men, including the 7-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in midweek in the Champions League.

Southgate has explained his decision not to include the Tottenham midfielder in his latest squad, adding that he is in a similar situation to Liverpool's Alex Oxlae in the coming months, but to put them in means I've got to leave someone out who is in form and playing well.de-Chamberlain, who has also been left out of the latest squad.

"It's little bit like Dele really where their seasons haven't really got going for either of them," the England boss said.

"We're expecting them to challenge in the coming months, but to put them in means I've got to leave someone out who is in form and playing well.

"So a Mason Mount or a James Maddison, one of those, they're in competition with those guys in the squad. So whenever you ask me about who I'm leaving out of the squad, it's about who I leave out to let them back in.

"It's a difficult call in those positions in particular and I believe those players will recognise the rationale for the decisions."

However, O'Hara believes that Alli should have been included in the squad, with the Spurs midfielder having already proved himself at international level, having previously played 37 times for his country.

And the former Spurs midfielder has suggested that there is one player in the squad who he could replace.

“[Jesse] Lingard I can understand being left out, he’s not been at it this season with Manchester United, and he’s not been making things happen," O'Hara told Talksport.

“But Dele Alli, I think Gareth should probably have stuck by him and given him confidence by putting him in the squad.

“I know he’s out of form, but he’s still young and he’s done a lot for his age.

“Southgate doesn’t need to look at Fabian Delph, does he?”
