Everton star Demarai Gray labelled 'inspirational' after Leeds display with clear transfer verdict given

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has heaped praise on Demarai Gray after his impressive display in Everton's 2-2 draw with Leeds United on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues' summer signing scored five minutes into the second-half to extend Everton's lead and was a threat throughout proceedings.

Gray was equally effective in the first Premier League game of the Rafa Benitez era after shining against Southampton.

The 25-year-old opened his goalscoring account for the Toffees at Elland Road, firing past Leeds keeper Ilan Meslier from a tight angle.

Reacting to this fine finish from the former Leicester City midfielder, Keown told BBC Sport: "Demarai Gray has got no right to score there.

“He puts it through the defender’s legs and spins on to his unfavoured left foot and really that’s inspirational.

“He’s just thought I’ll have a go here and unbelievably it’s squeezed in.

“Against the run of play I should mention as well – give him some freedom and it shows what he can do!”

Gray will now be eager to kick on as Everton look to preserve their unbeaten start to the 2021/22 season.

Keown described his start to life at the club as 'inspirational' and is backing the Blues' summer recruit for further success.

"He has been inspirational since he’s been there, last week he was whipping crosses in," said the Arsenal invincible.

"What a signing he has become for Everton. Fingers crossed he can go on and score more for Everton, who are looking really good this season.”
