Everton staff rotation explained as 'outstanding' new generation set Rafa Benitez task

David Unsworth believes Everton are very happy with implementing a "clear philosophy" throughout their academy, including an exciting new generation of under-23s stars.

The Director of Academy, who took over the role last September, has overseen a number of under-18s be slowly integrated into the older age group throughout the course of 2020/21.

But it's not just at that level of the academy that the pathway needs to run smoothly.

And Unsworth has explained one method behind how Everton are teaching their coaches to play in the same manner and with the same philosophy throughout the club.

He told evertonfc.com : “We’re going to have all the coaches in the Academy rotate with the Under-23s, which is fantastic for them to put into their team what we’re trying to do.

“That’s going to flow from top to bottom.

“There’s a clear philosophy of how we want to play and how we want to produce players running through the Academy.

“We’re really happy with how that’s going.”

Everton's U23s have enjoyed a strong start to their pre-season schedule, scoring 14 goals in three matches against senior opponents so far.

Younger players are set to form the spine of Unsworth's side for next season with a number of players aged 18 or younger already beginning to establish themselves - and even impressing in first team training recently.

And their manager is very excited by the group he has on his hands and how they have taken to the new methods introduced at the back end of last term.

He added: “It’s a really young group, which is great. We’re excited. Since I’ve been back at the club, this is probably the third cycle of players we’ve had in nine years.

“These boys are young and it’s certainly a new generation. We introduced a different formation at the end of last season and a few different demands on players, and they’ve really taken to it.

“They’re an outstanding group but they need to get better, obviously. They need to stand out at Under-23 level to then be able to stand out to the new manager and his staff.

“Then, it’s about impressing when they get the opportunity to train with the first team, which a couple of them have done already.”

Everton's U23s are back in action again on Tuesday evening, travelling to face Carlisle United in a behind-closed-doors match.
