The writer of Everton song Spirit of the Blues has shared a heartbreaking message on what it means to see his tune gain a new level of popularity and overtake popstars such as Miley Cyrus at the top of the charts on iTunes.
Carlo Ancelotti's side have won their first three games of the new season and found themselves top of the table before Leicester's thrashing of Manchester City. The Toffees are also still going strong in the Carabao Cup and face West Ham United in the fourth round on Wednesday.
As the positive results and performances start to flow, so does the feel good factor around the team and fans have celebrated by bringing back a Blues themed hit song
Twitter user FinKitch appeared to spark the trend following the third consecutive victory of the Premier League season and other users followed by dubbing the song over a range of hilarious videos.
Everton fans then began to urge one another to purchase and stream the song online and it entered the top ten at the weekend.
It soon began challenging the top six of Dermot Kennedy, Joel Corry, Clean Bandit, Paul Woolford, Sigala and front-runner Miley Cyrus before taking its place at the top of the table.
Now, one of the men responsible for creating the tune, Kenny Parry, has described the emotional feeling at receiving the news.
Speaking to evertonfc.com he said: “I was sat at home on Sunday not feeling great, then I got a call from Billy asking if I wanted some good news.
“He told me we were number one. I didn’t believe him. I am floating now.
“It is surreal and difficult to take in."
Parry has shared how recent heartrbreaking loss has meant it has all meant so much more to him personally.
“It has been good news for the family," Parry said.
"I lost my wife seven years ago, we were together since the days of The Cavern Club and were soulmates.
“It is a little lift from the sorrow for all of us.
“It has been lovely.
“Janice would be made up with what’s happening.
“I am loving it, it is a reason to live.
“It might not last long but while it does I am riding it.”
Parry wrote the hit 35 years ago with Billy Kinsley in just one sitting and claims it took two days from starting the process to having a finished recording.
Many fans have been adding the song onto videos and posting them on social media and Parry is a fan of one that involves a clip of classic film The Shawshank Redemption.
He laughed off the idea that a resurgence on the charts means an inflation in his bank account but the value of the song goes beyond any cash sum.
“People have said Billy and I should be shopping around for a small island in the Caribbean but it doesn’t work that way,” said Parry.
“I have been a songwriter all my life and ideas are always in my head.
“This just flowed off the pen, it wrote itself.
“It is a matter of luck, something pops in your head.
“It was a catchy tune and along the lines of Status Quo, who I have always loved.
“Maybe it sounds dated by today’s standards but it doesn’t matter, it has the singalong factor.
“It has slept for a long time but all of a sudden everyone is on it.
“It is lovely.”
After conquering Apple iTunes, Blues aren't showing any signs of slowing down and are aiming to get it into the Official Singles Chart Top 40 on Friday.
The song can still be bought for 79p on iTunes.
