Everton signing hailed as 'bargain of the season' as next career step outlined

An England call is on the cards for Demarai Gray should he continue his early-season form with Everton, according to Noel Whelan.

Gray has been in sensational form following his £1.7million transfer from German club Bayer Leverkuson.

A once highly rated winger at Birmingham City, the 25-year-old was snapped by Leicester City and was a part of their title-winning side in 2016.

However, a loss of form saw him move to the Bundesliga where he spent a year before returning to the Premier League this summer with Everton.

Given the low fee, Whelan dubbed Gray his “bargain of the season” already and can see him breaking into Gareth Sougthgate’s England squad if he can maintain this level of play.

“I can see it happening [an England call-up], but not right now,” he told Football Insider.

“I think he needs a bit more longevity in his game, more consistency in the Premier League.

“We’ve not seen him for a number of years and when you look at the array of quality England have in his position, it would be difficult to see how he can come in after two months of good performances.

“However, there’s no doubt that he’s going in the right direction, and he’s been my bargain of the season.

“If he keeps up this kind of form, he’ll be very hard to ignore for Gareth Southgate.”

Gray has made 38 appearances for various England youth sides but has never made an appearance for the senior side despite earning a call-up in 2019.

He is eligible for Jamaica and was named by Jamaica’s Football Federation president Michael Ricketts as a player on their radar earlier this year.

“Looking at the list I see Andre Gray, I see Demarai Gray, I see Isaac Hayden – who himself called the JFF to express his desire,” Ricketts told Jamaica’s Sportsmax TV, via The Voice, in March.

“Mason Holgate, Liam Moore – who has actually acquired his Jamaican passport – Nathan Redmond, Kemar Roofe and Ivan Toney. All of these are in the process of acquiring their Jamaican passport.”
