Everton sack Rafael Benitez after six months in charge following Norwich defeat

Everton have sacked Rafael Benitez after six months in charge.

Benitez leaves Goodison Park after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Norwich left Everton 16th in the Premier League after nine defeats in their past 12 games.

That run has seen the Toffees slip from fourth in the table to just six points above the relegation zone.

Everton’s travelling fans demanded that Benitez “get out of our club” during the Norwich defeat.

And the Spaniard has been sacked following an emergency board meeting.

Everton say an update on a permanent replacement will be made in due course.

An Everton statement read: “Everton Football Club can confirm the departure of Rafael Benitez as first team manager.

“Benitez, who joined Everton in June 2021, has left the Club with immediate effect.

“An update on a permanent replacement will be made in due course.”

Benitez signed a three-year contract when he took over from Carlo Ancelotti in the summer, which was an unpopular appointment with many Everton supporters due to his past links to their Merseyside rivals Liverpool.
