Everton's new stadium hopes given boost after government statement

Robert Jenrick says he wants to see "regeneration and good quality development" in Liverpool as Everton await his decision on their new stadium plans.

The secretary of state for Housing, Communities and Local Government was speaking in the House of Commons earlier today to confirm that central government will intervene in the running of Liverpool City Council.

Jenrick says the damning report, produced after an investigation by Max Caller, uncovered a worrying picture of "a dysfunctional culture", a "serious breakdown of governance" and "multiple apparent failures".

The 69-page report is now available for public scrutiny.

But as Jenrick delivered the shock findings he reiterated his hope to see Liverpool attract the level of development and investment the city requires, in words that can be seen as a boost to Everton's stadium hopes.

Jenrick's department are reviewing the Blues' planning application for a 52,888 stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock after it was given unanimous approval by the Council's planning committee last month.

The MP spoke of the need for regeneration as the city looks to emerge from the Covid pandemic and, in July, Everton's proposed new home on the waterfront was a key part of the Liverpool City Region's Economic Recovery Plan.

"We all share the same interests which are the delivery of public services and ensuring the people of Liverpool get value for money and the Council it deserves," Jenrick told the House of Commons today.

"And ensuring it can attract the inward investment, the regeneration and good quality development that the city certainly needs and we want to see delivered as we come out of the pandemic."

Jenrick has asked for more time to review the near 1200 pages of planning reports and documents related to Everton's stadium application, following the elapse of the initial 21 day period.

The Blues hopes to have an answer from the government next month.
