Everton's Lucas Digne jokes about Richarlison's red card vs Liverpool

Everton's Lucas Digne has joked on social media about trying to protect team-mate Richarlison from getting sent-off on Saturday.

The Toffees forward was shown a straight red in the Merseyside derby following a reckless challenge on Liverpool's Thiago.

But Digne has posted a photo on Instagram of him trying to prevent the Brazilian from receiving his marching orders.

The full-back is pictured tucking the referee's red card into his back pocket as he dealt with incident.

He included the caption: "I tried to do my best Pai @richarlison" with a laughing emoji.

Despite Digne trying to see the funny side much has been made about Richarlison's tackle on Saturday.

It was perhaps overshadowed by a similarly reckless challenge by Jordan Pickford on Virgil van Dijk.

The Everton goalkeeper escaped even a yellow card after the Dutchman was adjudged to be offisde.

Many though feel as if Pickford should have been given his marching orders irrespective of the offside decision.

The Reds centre-half is set for a lengthy spell out injured as he undergoes surgery while Thiago looks to survived relatively unscathed despite initial fears.

Liverpool will feel aggrieved with several of the refereeing decisions at Goodison Park.

Jordan Henderson's stoppage time winner was ruled out after Sadio Mane was given offside in the build up, although it was a hugely marginal call.

After the contest, which finished 2-2, Jurgen Klopp was clearly not in agreement with several of the decision.

“The only situation I saw back was the Henderson goal and the pass for Sadio, and I didn’t see an offside, sorry,” he said when asked about the disallowed goal.

“Maybe somebody would explain it to me, but the picture I saw, there was no offside.

“But it was offside because somebody decided it.”
