Everton's Kurt Zouma transfer hopes fade as Marco Silva prioritises centre-back after Chris Smalling rejection

Everton have made the signing of a centre-half their priority in what time remains in the transfer window.

The Blues are ready to give up hope of signing Kurt Zouma with Chelsea unwilling to sell the 24-year-old.

Everton had made Zouma one of their prime targets but are now admitting defeat with just over 24 hours of the window remaining .

A move to take Chris Smalling on loan from Manchester United has been rejected, it is believed, as the Blues race against the clock to find someone to bolster their defensive ranks.

Everton are looking to find a centre-back who can play on the left hand side of defence.

A loan move for Chelsea youngster Fikayo Tomori would, it is understood, be in addition to recruiting a senior defender if it were to materialise.

The Blues have until 5pm on Thursday evening to conclude their transfer business.
