Jordan Pickford is being considered as a possible England penalty taker should their Euro 2020 last-16 clash with Germany go all the way to a shootout.
Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate famously missed his semi-final penalty against Germany, who eventually went on to win Euro 96.
Prior to Southgate taking over, England had a shocking shoot-out record, winning just one from seven in competitions.
But Southgate has won both of his shoot-outs as England boss, with the first being against Colombia in the last World Cup.
While his side’s most recent shoot-out victory came against Switzerland in the Nations League finals back in 2019.
Pickford was one of the first five takers against the Swiss two years ago and Sportsmail believe he could be one of England’s early takers should Tuesday’s game go all the way to penalties.
Speaking ahead of the competition, the Everton man expressed an interest in taking a penalty in the knockout rounds of the tournament.
"Hopefully, we don't have to go to a shootout in this tournament, but, if we do, we'll be well prepared," he told the Official England Podcast.
"I'll put plenty of practice into taking them as well. You need to be there for the team if called upon. I'll step up and take one.
"We have plenty of quality finishers in the group, so I might be put down the pecking order!
"But I'll practice and make sure I nail penalties in training in case I need to take one."
While Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has already given his seal of approval to Pickford, hailing his technique and shooting abilities.
"He's a very clean striker of the ball," he said. "It makes it a lot easier when you have a keeper who could probably score a free-kick as well as a penalty."
